Bangladesh batters pounced on their overnight advantage to stretch their lead over New Zealand on Day 4.

Mehidy Hasan adds handy runs with tail to extend lead

Bangladesh captain and overnight centurion Najmul Hossain Shanto added just another run to his name on Day 4 morning as he was strangled down the leg side by his opposite number Tim Southee for 105. His senior partner Mushfiqur Rahim, however, remained defiant and scored 67 alluring runs from his end to extend Bangladesh’s lead with Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

The latter of the two cricketers listed a half-century of his own while batting with the tail and stretched his side’s total past the 300-run mark. Mehidy Hasan scored an unbeaten 50 and added 26 runs with number 11 Shoriful Islam before New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel polished off the tail with late wickets.

Hosts eventually folded up for 338 to set up a daunting 332-run fourth-innings target for New Zealand on a turning Sylhet surface.

Taijul pummels NZ with second four-fer of the match

New Zealand, chasing 332 in pursuit of a 1-0 lead in the series, lost senior opener Tom Latham for a duck within the first over at the hands of Shoriful Islam. Emboldened by Shoriful’s new-ball strike, Bangladesh spinners Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nayeem Hasan scythed through New Zealand’s middle-order with successive wickets before Daryl Mitchell’s counterattacking diligence took his side to safety till stumps.

Taijul unleashed the most damage to New Zealand’s famed batting order as he finished his day with figures of 4-40. His four-wicket burst included the key scalps of Kane Williamson, Devon Conway and Tom Blundell.

With Mitchell holding fort for New Zealand, they require another 219 runs to pull off an unlikely victory while Bangladesh spinners need just three more wickets with a day’s worth of play left in the contest.
