Sourav Ganguly expects Rohit Sharma to make a comeback to the shortest format in time to lead India at the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean & USA. Amidst speculations on the experienced opener's future as a player and skipper in T20Is, the former India captain deemed him the right man to guide the side at the next edition of the biannual ICC event.

Rohit was reportedly set to make his return to T20Is after a year-long absence via the forthcoming series in South Africa until those claims were quashed by the selection committee on Thursday (November 31) with the BCCI confirming the top-order stalwart had requested for a break from the limited-overs section of the trip next month.

The 36-year-old is currently on a holiday in London after being rested from the ongoing home T20I series versus Australia following a super quick turnaround from India's demanding ICC World Cup 2023 campaign, which ended with a heartbreaking defeat in the final in Ahmedabad on November 19.

Doubts have emerged on Rohit's future as captain and player since the defeat at the hands of the Australians. The 36-year-old is unlikely to take part in the next edition of the World Cup in 2027 when he will be nudging close to 40 and hasn't featured in any T20Is since November 2022 when India suffered a painstaking semifinal exit from the previous edition of the T20 World Cup.

Speaking to press about the brewing issue, Ganguly, however, backed the veteran cricketer to continue leading the side across formats until the looming T20 World Cup next June in the West Indies and USA as he is still performing well with the bat and led India astutely to the recent final of the World Cup 2023.

"I expect and I presume that Rohit Sharma will continue as captain till T20 World Cup in 2024," Ganguly was quoted as saying by PTI during the media interaction.

Notably, Rohit has been in prime form with the bat and made a whopping 597 runs in 11 innings of the World Cup 2023, expertly playing the role of a top-order aggressor with a strike-rate close to 130.
