India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by eight wickets in the Women’s T20 World Cup for the Blind at the Katunayake BOI Grounds in Colombo on Sunday, November 16. The win marked their fifth straight such result in the tournament as they soared into the semifinals.
However, what transpired after the match hinted at a moment far bigger than the scoreboard, as players from both sides were seen exchanging smiles and a heartfelt handshake to quietly reaffirm the spirit of cricket amid tense times between the two nations.
Women’s blind teams keep IND-PAK politics off the field in sporting display
Shortly after the match, the India and Pakistan women’s blind teams were spotted sharing a customary handshake with each other, as players from both sides kept their focus firmly on sportsmanship, offering a refreshing contrast to the tensions off the field.
As India and Pakistan women’s blind team players fostered goodwill despite rising geo-political tensions between the two countries, it was a stark shift from the 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup in the UAE a couple of months ago, where both India and Pakistan men’s senior teams kept their distance throughout the tournament.
Neither did India and Pakistan captains Suryakumar Yadav and Salman Agha interacted with each other at the toss or during the pre-final photoshoot, neither did the players from both sides shook hands with each other after each of their three faceoffs in the tournament.
It is worth noting that the strained atmosphere between the two nations stemmed from the Pahalgam terrorist attack and the subsequent Operation Sindoor that took place earlier this year.
In such a context, the women’s blind teams’ simple post-match gesture stood out as a rare reminder of how sport can still rise above the noise.
