In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally raised the issue of the Asia Cup 2025 trophy during the International Cricket Council (ICC) Board meetings held in Dubai.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, the ICC has offered to intervene and help to resolve the ongoing deadlock between the BCCI and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman, Mohsin Naqvi.
India defeated Pakistan in the Asia Cup final to lift the title on September 28 in Dubai. However, the 'Men in Blue' have not received the trophy. It is important to note that, according to reports, the trophy is under the custody of Mohsin Naqvi and is kept at the ACC headquarters in Dubai.
Informal but firm talks conducted during the meeting
According to the same reports, the discussions at the ICC Board meeting took place in a cordial and non-confrontational manner. In the meeting, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clearly stated that the trophy rightfully belongs to the Indian team and must be handed over immediately.
ICC steps in to break the deadlock
It is worth noting that, as the matter is not ending, ICC has now stepped in and is considering the formation of a 'special panel' to mediate and settle the dispute. The proposal received support from ICC board members, who agreed that the matter should be resolved swiftly.
However, BCCI's stance remains unchanged on this unresolved issue. Devajit Saikia made it clear that the BCCI would not accept the trophy directly from Mohsin Naqvi.
The controversy started when the Indian team boldly refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi during the post-match presentation ceremony. Naqvi (ACC President and Pakistan's Interior Minister) was present to hand over the trophy. But Suryakumar Yadav and team India decided to stay away, and soon the trophy was swiftly removed from the presentation area.
