Putting days of speculation to rest, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi finally arrived at the International Cricket Council (ICC) headquarters in Dubai on Friday to attend the all-important ICC Board meeting.
The main agenda of the meeting will undoubtedly be around the Asia Cup trophy controversy involving India and Pakistan.
According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has planned to bring up the issue of the Asia Cup trophy, which remains at the ACC headquarters (according to reports) in Dubai despite India’s victory over Pakistan on September 28.
Naqvi’s surprise appearance in Dubai
Earlier reports suggested that Naqvi might skip the ICC Board meeting due to 'domestic political issues.' In that case, PCB's Chief Operating Officer Sumair Syed was expected to attend the meeting. However, according to the latest report in The Times of India, Naqvi has arrived in Dubai at the last minute.
His sudden decision to attend the meeting has raised expectations, and it is likely expected that the BCCI officials will raise the topic over the unresolved trophy.
The BCCI has maintained that it will not stay silent as long as the Asia Cup trophy remains in ACC custody. A serious discussion on the matter is expected, with hopes of a formal decision emerging after the meeting.
Controversy over the Asia Cup trophy
It is important to note that the much-talked about controversy erupted after India defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the Asia Cup final held in Dubai. During the post-match presentation, Indian players reportedly refused to receive the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi.
After this incident, Naqvi allegedly walked off the stage with ACC officials, carrying the trophy with him before the ceremony could conclude.
Since then, reports claim that the Asia Cup trophy remains locked inside the ACC office. Another reports also mention that Naqvi wants a format ceremony in which he would present the trophy and medals to the 'Men in Blue'.
