England collapses in second inning vs India [Source: AP Photos]
England’s batting lineup faced a nightmare on the field as they created an unwanted record during the ongoing Test match against India at Edgbaston. For the first time in their Test history, England had 6 players dismissed for a duck in a single innings.
On Day 3, Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj grabbed early wickets to reduce England to 84/5. However, Harry Brook and Jamie Smith revived the inning, knitting a 303-run partnership. While Brook hit 158, Smith accumulated 184 runs.
England’s Late Collapse At Edgbaston Leads To Unique Record
Meanwhile, following Harry Brook’s wicket, England’s lower order collapsed. They lost Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir, Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope, and Ben Duckett on a duck.
From 387/5, the host team collapsed to 407/10. This is the first instance where England had 6 ducks in a single Test inning. Before this, England had recorded 5 ducks in an innings on 4 different occasions, but never 6.
What makes this more bizarre is that 2 English batters also scored centuries in the same innings. It is only the second time in Test history that England have had 6 ducks and 2 centuries in the same innings.
Jamie Smith was stranded on 184 off 207 balls as he missed his well-deserved double century. India is ahead with a 180-run lead with 2 days still left in the Test match.
Smith-Brook’s Partnership Shatters Records
Harry Brook and Jamie Smith scripted history on Day 3 of the second Test against India at Edgbaston, rescuing England from 84/5 with a stunning 303-run partnership. Their stand is now England's third-highest against India in Tests and the third-best sixth-wicket partnership ever against India.
It also ranks as the third-highest Test stand by any English pair at Edgbaston and the second-highest sixth-wicket partnership for England overall, behind Bairstow-Stokes' 399.
