Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan believes their batters must stay longer at the crease if they want to win ODIs. Speaking ahead of the second ODI against Sri Lanka, Tanzid stressed the need for set batters to bat long and bat deep, something that didn’t happen in the first match.
In the first game, Bangladesh were chasing 245 and appeared to be in command when Tanzid (62) and Najmul Hossain Shanto added a 71-run stand. However, both got out in the same over, leading to a dramatic collapse where Bangladesh lost 5 wickets in just 26 balls and went on to lose the match by 77 runs.
Tanzid Hasan Suggests Success Mantra For Bangladesh
In order to avoid such collapses in the future, opening batter Tanzid Hasan, talking to ESPN Cricinfo, has urged Bangladesh to bat deep and long.
"We had a long discussion about the last match. The coaches told us that on a wicket like this, those who get set need to finish things off since it's hard for new batters to adjust. They have top quality spinners in their side, so those who are set need to bat as long as possible. The way the wicket is behaving, if someone gets set, he needs to play a long innings and take the team home," Hasan said.
Leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga took 4 wickets for just 10 runs, and Tanzid pointed out that left-handers should face him more often, as he's more effective against right-handers.
"Shanto bhai and I, the way we were batting at that time, if we had stayed for another 10-15 overs, the match would have been much easier. Just one message for the next match: for those who are new to the wicket, it's a bit difficult at first, but set batters need to bat long, bat deep, and take the game to the end," he added.
Bangladesh’s middle order struggled badly, scoring just 1 run from positions 4 to 6, their worst ever in ODI history. Missing senior players like Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah also added to the pressure. The Tigers have now lost 7 ODIs in a row and are under pressure to bounce back.
Taskin Ahmed Stunned By Bangladesh’s Collapse
Bangladesh pace bowler Taskin Ahmed reacted in disbelief when the team collapsed from 100/1 to 107/8, losing seven wickets for just 5 runs in the first ODI against Sri Lanka.
Describing it as surprising and hurtful, Taskin attributed it to poor shot choice and lack of calmness. He said the turning point was the run-out of Shanto and Tanzid's dismissals in the same over.
Taskin admitted the team became too relaxed and stressed that it's time to stop using the transition period excuse. Bangladesh must recover quickly with two matches remaining in the series.
