Babar Azam in action [Source: AFP]
On Tuesday, Pakistan will cross swords against Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the three-match series on home soil. Led by Shaheen Afridi, Pakistan were phenomenal in the recently concluded South Africa series, defeating the visitors convincingly by 2-1. However, amid Pakistan's dominance, what grabbed the limelight was three consecutive failures from Babar Azam, who would be desperate to make his chances count against the Lankans.
Although Babar Azam is struggling with poor form, he has been a match-winner for Pakistan, especially in white-ball cricket, in the past. Considering his ability and experience, we reckon the Lahore-born will play a significant role for the Men in Green in the upcoming series.
As Babar Azam prepares to silence his critics through impactful returns, here are three major milestones that he can break in the Sri Lanka ODIs.
Most ODI hundreds for PAK vs SL: Babar Azam on the verge of joining Inzamam
Legendary former opener Saeed Anwar has the most ODI hundreds for Pakistan against Sri Lanka. While he claims the top spot with seven tons, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez have four centuries each, followed by Babar Azam, Ramiz Raja and Saleem Malik, who have three hundreds to their names.
Thus, if Babar slams one century in the upcoming series, he will join Inzamam and Hafeez for the second-most tons for Pakistan against Sri Lanka in ODIs.
Most ODI runs for Pakistan vs Sri Lanka: Babar could go past Imran Khan
Babar Azam has been a force to reckon with the bat against Sri Lanka in ODIs, amassing 535 runs in just eleven innigs at a superb average of 53.50. Interestingly, he's behind Pakistan's 1992 World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan, who scored 636 ODI runs against the Island nation.
So, if Babar scores 102 runs across three innings in the upcoming series, he will surpass Imran Khan on the elusive list.
5000 international runs at home
Babar Azam has been remarkably consistent for Pakistan on home soil. The stylish right-handed batter has struck 4848 runs across three formats in Pakistan at a magnificent average of 51.57.
Therefore, if Babar scores 152 runs in the Sri Lanka ODIs, he will become only the fourth batter to complete 5000 international runs on home soil for Pakistan after legendary cricketers like Javed Miandad, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Yousuf.
