One among Jurel and Jaiswal could be RR's next IPL captain [Source: AFP]
According to the emerging reports, Rajasthan Royals might appoint either Dhruv Jurel or Yashasvi Jaiswal as their captain for the IPL 2026 if Sanju Samson is traded to the Chennai Super Kings. Samson is likely to join the Super Kings via an IPL trade, with RR reportedly demanding Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran in return.
Amid the IPL trade chaos, it has been reported that Dhruv Jurel and Yashasvi Jaiswal have emerged as the frontrunners to replace Samson as the skipper, provided the Kerala batter parts ways with the franchise.
Jurel is ahead of Jaiswal in RR captaincy race
As reported by the Times of India (TOI), although there's a toss-up between Dhruv Jurel and Yashasvi Jaiswal for RR captaincy, the former is likely to pip the latter in the race due to his multidimensional skills.
Besides keeping the wickets, Jurel is a certain starter in the Royals' playing XI. He is also very close to RR's new head coach Kumar Sangakkara, which is believed to be a key factor behind his potential appointment as the new captain. Riyan Parag, who led RR in IPL 2025 in the absence of Samson, is surprisingly not among the captaincy candidates, the report claims.
If Rajasthan Royals hand over the captaincy duties to Jurel, they can reduce Jaiswal's workload by using him as their impact substitute for a specialist bowler while batting.
Jurel was one of RR's most successful players last season, amassing 333 runs at an average of 37 and a blistering strike rate of 156.34. Thus, he justified his price tag of INR 14 Crores and is expected to be a vital cog in the Royals' setup for the next IPL edition.
