As per the latest update on CREX, covers are firmly in place and we could be in for a long delay, which might result in a rain-curtailed affair amid the inclement weather conditions. That said, it won't be surprising if the game gets called off, as Nelson has historically witnessed a number of rain-affected fixtures.
The Saxton Oval in Nelson has hosted 12 ODIs, with three games being affected by rain. While two of those witnessed a result by virtue of the DLS method, the other match had to be abandoned due to an incessant downpour.
However, interestingly, the ongoing game between New Zealand and West Indies is the first-ever rain-affected T20I at this venue. So, if this fixture gets abandoned, this will be the second occasion of an international white-ball game getting called off at Saxton Oval.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, New Zealand kept the West Indies openers under the pump with a disciplined bowling effort. The BlackCaps' strategy to frustrate the visiting batters with accurate bowling paid rich dividends, with the in-form Alick Athanaze eventually losing focus and gifting away his wicket.
When rain intervened in the high-voltage clash, West Indies were 38 for one in 6.3 overs, with Amir Jangoo and captain Shai Hope batting on 12* and 3*, respectively.
