Cricketers generally tend to downplay their weaknesses and vulnerabilities, but Pakistan batter, Azam Khan went the other way as he discussed his struggles against England pacer, Mark Wood, during a T20I game in 2024. Khan looked dodgy against England’s fiery pacer, and a video has gone viral wherein he talked about the unplayable bouncer that rattled him completely.

In a podcast with Roha Nadeem, Khan recalled how Mark Wood terrorised him, and how the Oval crowd booed him and taunted him for his inability to play fast bowling.

My life almost stopped: Azam Khan recalls his struggles against Mark Wood

The incident dates back to a T20I game at the Oval in 2024 between Pakistan and the hosts. In the contest, Khan walked out to bat when Pakistan was reeling at 84/4. The first ball he faced from Mark Wood was a thunderbolt bouncer and this is when things turned worse for him.

“Mark Wood ne mujhe pehla bouncer mara. I left it. I was like, ha theek hain. Matlab sahi hain. Humare yaha bhi 150 wale bowler hain,” recollected Azam. (When Mark Wood bowled by the first bouncer. I left it. I was like, Alright, we have 150 kph bowlers in Pakistan too.)

“When he bowled me that second bouncer. I was like, woah, yeh matlab kya hua hain mere saath? Like meri zindagi na ekdum ruk gayi, bhai ye mere saath kya hua hain!!!??”, said Azam Khan. (When he bowled me that second bouncer. I was like What has happened to me. My life just like paused for a second, and I thought about what had just happened to me.)

How one particular moment broke Azam Khan's heart

Azam Khan also stated that one particular moment completely broke his heart. During the contest, Khan also dropped a couple of easy catches as England won the match. One of the Pakistani reporters asked an English fan - Who is your favourite Pakistan cricketer?”

The fan replied, “Azam Khan, because he can’t bat, can’t field, and can’t do anything.”

This statement shattered Azam Khan as he thought, "Yahi izzat hai kya meri international cricket me?”

The Pakistan batter failed in the match as he failed to score a single run in the match and walked back after facing five deliveries. Moreover, he had an off-day as a keeper, dropping several catches to hand England an easy win.
