Ayush Mhatre, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) youngster and India Under-19 captain, has once again failed to live up to expectations against Australia Under-19s in the ongoing tri-match ODI contest.

Across his three innings in the series, Ayush Mhatre has managed only 10 runs, including a disappointing run in the second ODI. The most recent collapse came in the third ODI, where Mhatre scored just four runs from four balls before being dismissed by Ben Gordon in the second over of the innings.

Mhatre's fall from grace

After India elected to bat in the 3rd ODI, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre opened the innings. Mhatre was the first to depart, managing only four runs and leaving India in trouble at 10 for one at the end of 1.4 overs.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi followed soon after, adding just 16 runs to the opening stand before being dismissed. As the match continues, Vedant Trivedi and Rahul Kumar are at the crease, with Trivedi showing glimpses of form. Yet, the spotlight remains firmly on Mhatre, whose struggles have raised eyebrows considering his impressive career statistics.

Mhatre's shining List A stats

In List A cricket, Mhatre has accumulated 634 runs at an average of 57.64, underlining his potential and consistency. During IPL 2025, CSK’s new acquisition scored 240 runs in seven matches at a strike rate of 188.98, including a half-century, highlighting his ability in the T20 format.

However, his recent performances for India Under-19s starkly contrast these achievements. Notably, he recorded a duck while chasing Australia’s 250-run target in the second ODI.

Mhatre's consistency at stake

Mhatre's youth ODI career has been impressive, with scores of 70, 38, 33, 143, 86, 45, and 48, reflecting his consistency at that level. Yet, his vulnerability in the current series is evident and concerning.

For a player of his pedigree, particularly one who has been trusted as a captain and relied upon as a key opener, such failures are disappointing. These struggles could raise concerns not only for CSK, which invested in him during IPL 2025, but also for the Indian youth team, especially as they prepare for future international assignments.
