In the second ODI of the India A Under-19 tour of Australia at Ian Healy Oval, Brisbane, Indian captain Ayush Mhatre had another outing to forget.

After struggling in the first match, where he managed just 6 runs from 10 balls, Mhatre was dismissed for a duck in this game, gone without scoring after facing only two deliveries.

Opening the innings alongside Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the young skipper carried the team’s hopes but fell almost immediately. On just the second ball of the first over, Australia young pacer William Byrom delivered a sharp back-of-length ball outside off.

Mhatre tried to pull but was beaten by the pace, sending the ball off the upper edge straight to mid-off. A safe catch followed, and Mhatre had to walk back for what’s known as a “silver duck.”

Vaibhav Suryavanshi powers U-19 fightback vs Australia

Losing the captain so early was a major blow for India. But thankfully, Vaibhav Suryavanshi stepped up in style. The Rajasthan Royals prospect kept his composure and steadied the innings.

Teaming up with Vihaan Malhotra, he played responsibly at first and then shifted gears to attack the bowlers. The duo stitched together an impressive 117-run partnership that brought India right back into the contest.

Suryavanshi’s innings was a treat to watch. He scored 70 runs off just 68 deliveries, hitting 5 boundaries and launching 6 massive sixes into the stands. His knock not only repaired the damage caused by Mhatre’s early dismissal but also set a strong platform for the rest of the batting lineup.

Unfortunately, his stay ended in the 19th over, but by then, the momentum was firmly with India.

At the time of writing, India are at 189 for 3 after 30 overs, looking well-placed to post a big total. Having already won the first ODI by 7 wickets, India currently lead the series 1-0.
