INDIA WIN!
Ravindra Jadeja dismisses Dilshan Madushanka as India win by 302 runs. This is the second-largest victory in the ODI World Cup history.
A mini win for Sri Lanka. They have surpassed their Asia Cup 2023 final total.
WICKET!!!
Rajitha nicks one to second slip as Shubman Gill completes the catch. Shami becomes the highest wicket-taker for India in the World Cup history. He also claims his third five-wicket haul in the ODI World Cups.
Shami Bhaiii!
The innings has gone for 17 balls without a wicket. This is the second-longest partnership in terms of balls.
Will India to able to break these records?
Lowest score in ODI - 35 (Zimbabwe)
Lowest score in ODI World Cup - 36 (Canada)
Shami takes a four-for!
Mathews gets cleaned up as Shami takes his fourth wicket. This is his third consecutive match in which he has taken four or more wickets.
Crowd wants Virat Kohli to bowl. Kohli reciprocates to the cheers by warming up.
What a review by India!!!
This is KL Rahul's wicket. He had to convince Rohit to take DRS. The ultraedge shows the ball had flicked the gloves. Sri Lanka loss their seventh wicket in the form of Dushmantha Chameera as Shami bags his third.
Worst Powerplay Score in the ODI World Cup History!
Sri Lanka record the worst powerplay score in the ODI World Cup history. Their 14/6 today beat Pakistan and Canada's 14/2 and 14/3 respectively.
Make it 14/6!!!
Shami takes two in two as Dushan Hemantha gets dismissed for a golden duck. The fast-bowler is on a hat-trick now. In every match that he has played in his World Cup, he has taken wickets on two consecutive balls at least once.
Shami gets rid of Asalanka!!!
Mohammad Shami too takes a wicket in his first over. Asalanka slashes hard but found the fielder at backward point. Sri Lanka lose half of their side in the first powerplay.
Siraj adding in some excitement. He is trying to get under the batter's skin. After bowling a bouncer against Charith Asalanka, he exchanges a few pleasantries but the Sri Lankan responds with a smile.
Lajawab Miyan!
India have again taken giant leaps to march on the path of another one-sided win. Runs are not easy to come by. Wickets are falling. What a match India is having.
Will Siraj be able to better this?
Siraj has just destroyed the bails and this has caused a slight delay.
SIUUU!!!
Sri Lanka have started off from where they left in the Asia Cup 2023 final. Siraj again is writing their collapse. Capatin Kusal Mendis' poor return continues as he gets castled. Sri Lanka are four down and it's just been 3.1 overs.
Oh my word, Siraj, you beauty!!!
Now, he is gone. A clear nick there. Samarawickrama pokes at an outside-off delivery that induces an edge. Rohit had brought an extra catcher a slips and the move works as Samarawickrama walks back to the dressing room.
Samarawickrama, You should thank DRS!
What is happening? Oh, wait. The bat is nowhere near the ball. The bat had touched the ground, it seems. Maybe, this would have promoted the umpire the raise his finger on a caught-behind appeal. DRS saves Sadeera Samarawickrama.
Siraj follows suit!!!
It's another wicket. Or is it? Karunaratne has opted for DRS as he is given out LBW. Yes, ball-tracking shows three reads and Mohammed Siraj starts off nicely. This will boost his confidence. Rohit is pumped as Sri Lanka are nowhere in this run-chase.
Every ball seemed like an event as Bumrah was right on the money. It cannot get better than this for India with Bumrah firing in on all cylinders.
Bumrah starts off from where he left!!!
Bumrah, what are you? How can someone be so good. A perfect ball to start the innings. Nissanka gets hit on his pads. He takes a review but it was plumb. Sri Lanka lose their first wicket on the very first ball of the innings.
Action resumes!
Rohit Sharma is giving pep talk to his teammates. Alright, he is done with it. Out walks the Indian players. Sri Lanka openers Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne are ready. Jasprit Bumarh comes in running. Here we go...
If Sri Lanka win, it will be the highest successful run-chase in ODIs at the Wankhede Stadium.
Highest successful run-chases at Wankhede:
New Zealand - 281 vs India
India - 275 vs Sri Lanka
Australia 256 vs India
Sri Lanka - 226 vs India
Also, it will be the highest successful run-chase in the ODI World Cup history.
India end up with 357/7
End of the first innings. Runs galore at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as India have posted a mammoth 357 on the board for the loss of eight wickets. Fine knocks from Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer have pushed India to a good total, but they should have scored a tad bit more after the start they got thanks to the masterful partnership between Kohli and Gill. Nevertheless, the Lankan batters would look to chase down the mighty Indian total just like they did back in 2017 CT.
Rohit Sharma applauding Iyer's knock!
5 wicket haul for Madushanka! Another heartbreak for India and Iyer!
Another slower ball and another brilliantly disguised delivery by Madushanka. The Lankan pacer has bagged a 5-fer and a deserving one too. He has been the best bowler for Sri Lanka in the tournament. Nonetheless, a game-changing innings from Iyer, who departs for 82.
BACK TO BACK HUMONGOUS MAXIMUM FOR IYER
2000 runs for Shreyas Iyer
2000 ODI runs for Shreyas Iyer. Brings up the milestone with a boundary. Opens the face of the blade on the last ball to get a streaky boundary. This has been a solid knock from the India No. 4.
Fewest innings taken to reach 2000 ODI runs for India:
38 - Shubman Gill
48 - Shikhar Dhawan
49 - Shreyas Iyer
52 - Navjot Sidhu
300 for INDIA
300 up for India. With Jadeja and Shreyas in and five overs to go, India will surely be eyeing to get to 360 from here on.
Well-decorated fifty for India's No.4
As dashing boundary and Shreyas Iyer smashes a brutal half-century in a much-needed juncture of the day. A streaky boundary for Shreyas Iyer, and the Mumbaikar gets a standing ovation on his achievement! With Jadeja on the other end, this partnership is going to crucial for India from here on. This is India's last recognised pair.
SKY departs, Madushanka has 4
Short ball angling in over the left shoulder of Suryakumar, who goes for his trademark shot but fails to make a connection. He gets inside the line and misses the pull to the keeper! Or did he get a feather on the glove? Kusal Mendis appealed in full confidence, but the umpire Paul Reiffel didn't give it out. Mendis reviewed it. Fair delivery. Replays confirms that there was a glove on it. A tiny bit of spikes, and Reiffel has to overturn his original decision to out. Madushanka has four wickets now and SKY has to depart after a small stay at the crease on his home ground!
Another one bites the dust! KL Departs!
Seems like the ball is not coming onto the bat properly. This one just held onto the surface as KL Rahul was a touch early in his shot and finds the man at short covers. However, the only positive is that it'll bring Suryakumar Yadav to the crease, who can be the difference between a 320 and a 370 here.
Kohli looks dejected after missing out on a deserving ton!
The curse is real! Kohli is a goner!
Kohli follows Gill back to the pavilion. A superb slower delivery that deceived the Indian batter. A check-shot from Kohli and he founds the man at short mid-off. The entire Wankhede goes silent and rightly so. No number 49 today.
Gill is gone!! Wrong shot selection!
Heartbreak for Gill! He was getting closer to his maiden World Cup hundred, but perishes for a run-a-ball 92. The entire Wankhede stands on their feet to applause a brilliant knock. A short pitched ball, and Gill gets an outside-edge trying to steer it past the keeper. A simple catch for Kusal Mendis.
India need to accelerate!
Yes, Kohli and Gill have been playing exceptionally well, but the Lankan attack looks tired and they need to press the paddle now. A good batting surface presented and a power-packed batting still to come.
Sri Lanka rueing missed chances!
Both Kohli and Gill were dropped a couple of times early in their innings and both the batters are making them pay at the moment. Had the Lankan Lions held onto the catch, things would have been different for them.
Anurag: Just don't want to jinx it, but today looks the day when Kohli will equal Tendulkar's record of 49 ODI centuries. As expected, the pitch has gotten better and Kohli won't get a better opportunity to equal that feat.
Arjun: India haven't hit a single maximum in this innings. That's what happen when Rohit Sharma falls cheaply. Interestingly, the Men in Blue have failed to hit a maximum in the first powerplay just twice in this WC, and both the times Rohit was dismissed early.
Shubman Gill reaches his half-century
The Prince follows the King! Brings up his 50! Fuller-length delivery outside off. 11th ODI fifty for Shubman Gill. He is back in form and means business today against the Lankans.
400 for Kohli
400 runs for Virat Kohli in this World Cup. It is the second time he has done so in WCs. He is the only Indian cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma to achieve this feat.
50 for VK!
70th ODI fifty for Virat Kohli. The crowd is loving this and chants of 'Kohli Kohli' at the Wankhede Stadium. He is eyeing a century now to equal Tendulkar's 49 ODI centuries.
The Prince joins the King
Shubman Gill hammers it. Gill steps down the ground and smacks it flat batted over extra cover for a cracking boundary. Virat loved it as well. Gill is stamping his authority. And Kohli's reaction says it all!!
Madushanka is welcomed by streaks of fours
FOUR!!! Kohli is just six runs shy of another fifty in this World Cup. Virat gets one stride forward and times the bones out of this straight drive with the bowler, non-striker and the mid-off fielder being a mere spectator.
Update: Virat Kohli is just one run away from completing 1000 ODI runs in 2023. He has also notched 8000 ODI runs in Asia - the fastest to do so. And he has completed 1000 ODI runs this year with a single off Theekshana.
The battle named VK vs Chameera ⚔️
The Lankan physio has come in to treat Dushmantha Chameera, who fell on his right shoulder a few balls when dropped Kohli off a leading edge.
Leading edge and Kohli's dropped off and by Chameera
Dear me! Virat Kohli survives! Chameera had three go at that one as the leading edge travels to the left of the bowler. My god, Kohli is struggling to find put bat on the ball. Chameera's deliveries and fizzing past VK's inside and outside edges here in Wankhede.
Dropped!!! Gill gets a lifeline
Charith Asalanka drops Shubman Gill at cover point. Not an easy chance but at this level, you have to take these. Gill gets another day to tell his tale in front of the Mumbai crowd.
Gill opens his account in the fifth over
Madushanka bowls a short delivery and Shubman Gill pounces on it. He pulls it away in the vacant mid wicket region. And, Madushanka overcompensates, on which Gill plays a wonderful stroke off the backfoot. Punches through the gap in the off-side for the second boundary on the successive ball.
Just fell short of Kusal Mendis!
Inside edge and dropped short of diving Mendis to his left. Another in-seamer and Virat was tentative again. He's looking like a cat on a hot tin roof.
KING punishes Madushanka
Clipped away for a boundary. Kohli flicks it nicely past the mid wicket fielder for a boundary. No one out on the boundary as there is a traditional fine leg in place and the ball runs away to the fence in a flash. Classy Kohli in Mumbai!!
Chameera with a maiden from the other end.
Kohli opens his bank account
Virat Kohli is away with a boundary. Madushanka bowls it full and on the pads and Kohli isn't going to miss out on this one. There is a leg gully in place but Kohli is aware of it as he clips it fine to the right of Karunaratne for a boundary. End of an eventful over. An eventful over - two boundaries and a wicket in the first over.
Virat Kohli is already out in the middle on Ball 3 of the match.
What a way to begin the innings - 4 and OUT!
Rohit and India and already running. And he's already gone. Rohit flicked an erred delivery to fine leg for a boundary. But, he's done on the following ball.
Madushanka, You Beauty!!! That's a cracking delivery from Madushanka and as he always does, picks up a wicket with the new ball. The crowd is stunned and there is a pin drop silence at the Wankhede Stadium as the Indian captain departs. Rohit sans any feet movement looks to defend it but gets beaten on the outside edge. The ball hits the top of the off-stump. IND- 4/1 (0.2)
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill stride out to the middle. The localboy will face the ball one of this fixture. Rohit vs Dilshan Madushanka. And the Indian skipper starts with a boundary
National anthem time in Mumbai's Wankhede. We'll start have Sri Lanka's anthem before every Indian has goosebumps.
