SA WON BY 190 RUNS!
South Africa continued their good run in the tournament. They recorded another 350-plus score as de Kock and van der Dussen lead their way with centuries. Chasing 358 runs, New Zealand could never gain momentum as the Proteas bowlers kept on taking wickets right from the start, eventually bowling out the Black Caps at a score of 167.
South Africa marched to the top of the points table with six wins, while New Zealand are in deep waters as Pakistan and Afghanistan are closely following them.
This brings us to the end of another live blog. We will come back tomorrow with an India game. Do not forget to tune in one hour before that match starts. Until the, Sayonara!
SOUTH AFRICA WIN!
Coetzee finally breaks the partnership by dismissing Phillips as South Africa win by 190 runs. A perfect game for the Proteas. And they also climb to the top of the points table with this victory.
50 FOR PHILLIPS!
He is playing a lone hand and a very important one, considering things could eventually boil down to NRR. The decision to send out Henry to bat is coming out nicely as the partnership for the final wicket is now of 28 runs, which is the second-highest for the Kiwis in this match.
Henry is visibly struggling with his fitness. But on the other end, Phillips is scoring some useful runs in the form of boundaries.
Matt Henry walks out to bat despite a hamstring injury. This tells how badly New Zealand want to lower the deficit of the defeat.
Maharaj cleaning up the tail!!!
Trent Boult comes down the pitch for a wild heave as the ball lobs off high in the air for Miller take another easy catch at long-off.
This tweet takes the cake!
WOW! HAIL MAHARAJ!!!
Neesham seemed injured. Even if he wasn't, he could not have done much on that delivery. It turned back in a long way and beat the batter's defense before lighting up the bails.
Neesham is now out in the middle.
Southee perishes!
It was as plumb as it could get. Still, Southee tried to delay the inevitable by opting for a review. The ball-tracking shows three reds as Jansen celebrates another wicket. What a match he is having.
Tim Southee has come ahead of Jimmy Neesham. He has padded up but it seems there is an issue with his thumb as the ball had hit him there while he was bowling in the first innings.
Maharaj strikes again!!!
Mitchell Santner gets the taste of his own medicine. Now, he finally knows how it feels to get deceived by a left-arm spinner. Santner gets cleaned up as New Zealand lose their sixth wicket.
Although the match might be already over as we all know the result, there is a very important sub-plot in this game. New Zealand cannot afford a massive loss as it will open the chances for the likes of Pakistan and Afghanistan or even Sri Lanka. So, their objective right now should be to take this chase as deep as they can.
High in the nightsky and it's out!
Mitchell takes a risk against Keshav Maharaj, trying to create an early pressure on the left-arm spinner. He dances down the track only to send the ball high in the air. David Miller takes a great catch at long-off.
SA LOSE A REVIEW!
The Proteas took a DRS for a caught-behind but the ultraedge shows no spike.
15 runs come off the 17th over. An excellent one for New Zealand but only one such over will not do any good to them. They need to be consistent in run-scoring and with Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips at the crease, they should be at ease in keeping up with the required rate. However, four Kiwi wickets are already down and this is a major worry.
LATHAM IS GONE!!!
Kagiso Rabada joins the party. Latham tries to turn the ball to the leg side, closes the face of the bat but it takes a leading edge and is safely grabbed by the cover fielder.
Jansen + Coetzee = Babar's Match Winners
STAT ATTACK!
South Africa have taken at least two wickets in the first powerplay in their match in the 2023 World Cup. And Jansen has been the primary force behind this as he has put at least one wicket to his name in the starting 10 overs in this World Cup.
Coetzee sends back Young!
The pacer comes in the attack and makes an impact straightway. He bowls an absolute beauty in the outside off channel. Young poked at it and nicks it to the South Africa wicket-keeper who makes no mistake in taking an easy catch.
Powerplay belongs to SA!
New Zealand were already behind coming to this run-chase. And the way the first powerplay has gone by, they are further down a big hole. It's still a long way to go but South Africa can end this up early.
NZ 51/2 IN 10 OVERS
Ravindra holes out!!!
The rising required rate did him there. He took on a short ball by playing a pull. He did not get on top of the delivery as the ball could not attain enough elevation. The fielder at fine leg pouches it and Jansen has another wicket.
Young up the gears!
First signs of aggression from New Zealand. They know they cannot get away with this at this rate and therefore, Young has taken the responsibility of upping the ante. Two boundaries come in Ngidi's over as the Black Caps score in double digits in last six deliveries.
New Zealand are reeling. They have failed to make the most of the batting powerplay and the wicket of Conway has added to their woes. It's again down to Rachin Ravindra to help them make a comeback.
WILL YOUNG BRINGS UP 1000 ODI RUNS!
Conway on his way out!!!
Jansen bowls a back of length delivery. It swings in sharply and bounces out Conway who tries to cut it at the end moment and hands a catch to Aiden Markram at the slips.
SA PACERS RIGHT ON MONEY!
Jansen and Lungi Ngidi have not allowed the New Zealand openers to free their arms by bowling at tight line and length. Conway and Young cannot afford too many dots and must take advantage of the fielding restrictions.
We are all set for what I believe will be an enthralling run-chase. The Kiwi openers Devon Conway and Will Young have strode out. Marco Jansen is ready to bowl. The umpire have called play.
New Zealand came close to achieving the record of highest successful run-chase in the ODI World Cup history against Australia. It's not that they would have wanted it but destiny has given them another chance to create history.
NZ NEEDS 358 TO WIN!
Aiden Markram finishes things off in style as South Africa muster 119 off the last 10 overs as they power their way to 357/4 in 50 overs after being sent into bat first.
MARKRAM ENDS IT WITH A SIX!🔥
MILLER GONE!
In the air and taken by Mitchell. That's an outstanding catch from Daryl Mitchell. Great presence of mind shown by the Kiwi all-rounder and he dismissed Miller with a brilliant fielding effort.
A Phenomenal half century by David Miller!
SIXXX!!!!! Miller brings up his fifty in style. Also brings up South Africa's 350. The decision to promote Miler has worked for the Proteas.
KLASSEN IS HERE!!!
South Africa have now scored 300+ runs batting first in eight consecutive matches🤩
WICKET!!!!! OH NO- RASSIE :((
Tim Southee gets his second wicket. He gets rid of both the South African centurions, earlier he got rid of Quinton de Kock and now it's Rassie van der Dussen.
KILLER MILLER'S KILLER SIX!!!!!!!!!!!
A great decision by SA team to promote David Miller to Number 3.
Rassie van der Dussen Joins The Party!
What a tournament Rassie van der Dussen is having in India. The top-order batsman was struggling to get his rhythm right since the injury after the last T20 World Cup, but when it mattered, he delivered.
This is van der Dussen's second hundred in the World Cup 2023, and he got there in style, smacking a gorgeous boundary against Jimmy Neesham.
In comes David Miller instead of Markram or Klaasen. Bold move by SA!
QDK departs after 4th ton
Finally, the Kiwis manage to break this stand. de Kock finds Phillips perfectly at backward point. End of an outstanding knock from Quinton de Kock. Southee has a wicket to his name. QDK's 4th century in this World Cup. 2 down for 238 after 40 overs.
Century for Quinton de Kock!!!!!
His 4th century in this World Cup edition and he has broken Kallis' record for most centuries in a single edition of the 50-over World Cup. He looks like a man on a mission in his last 50-over tournament.
His batsmanship has always been of highest quality but the kind of maturity he is showing in this World Cup is something that has been quite pleasing to see. Double-hundred loading?
Oh, Just away from Trent Boult!
A mistimed lofted shot from Rassie van der Dussen as he tries to hit one over mid off. The ball looped up high in the air and Trent Boult running backward, dived to catch it, only to miss it by whisker.
Just In: Henry won't participate further in the match against South Africa.
DRINKS BREAK IN PUNE
Time for Drinks in Pune. South Africa are well-placed and have laid the platform for a big score. They are 169/1 after 32 overs with Quinton de Kock nearing yet another hundred. He is batting on 78* off 89 balls. Rassie van der Dussen in the last few overs is not finding the gaps and finding fielders. It seems he has lost his timing as he battles out there on 59* off 75 balls. Maybe this drinks break will help him get his mojo back.
Matt Henry walks off the field..
Henry is taken off the field and the seamer was holding his calf as he walked off the field after bowling 5.3 overs. The Kiwis will be in trouble if he doesn't come back for his remaining quota.
Fifty for Rassie
Rassie van der Dussen gets to his 50 off 61 balls. His 14th in ODIs. His rich vein of form continues as he raises the bat to the gallery. The 150 up for the South Africans.
500 for Quinny de Kock!
The former South African captain is batting like a dream in his last ODI World Cup. With a boundary off Southee, QDK has become the first Protea batter to smash 500 runs in an ODI World Cup 👏👏👏
ICYMI: This is the seventh 100 plus partnership for South Africa in this World Cup. No other side has this many.
Most Runs for South Africa in ICC World Cup Single Edition:
489* - Quinton de Kock in 2023 (7 innings)*
485 - Jacques Kallis in 2007 (9 innings)
482 - AB de Villiers in 2015 (7 innings)
443 - Graeme Smith in 2007 (10 innings)
410 - Peter Kirsten in 1992 (8 innings)
IS QUINTON OUT??
Nope, it's a 'BUMP' ball.
The New Zealand players feel confident. The umpires get together for a chat and sends it upstairs. This is an umpire's review for a possible bump ball. Replays are in and clearly shows that the ball bounces on the ground. Easy call for the TV umpire. NOT OUT it is.
FIFTY FOR QUINNY!!!!
He has looked in sublime form and is playing a gem of an innings. What a tournament he is having!
ANOTHER QDK SPECIAL LOADING?
AM I A VISIONARY?
I literally asked for Phillips' introduction two minutes ago, and here he comes. And he almost got rid of QDK here. The South African opener mistimed a stroke high the air but it fell between three fielders near deep mid wicket region.
Arjun: The BlackCaps should look to try working with spinners from both ends. Why not bring on the man with the golden arm, Glenn Phillips, here?
DRINKS BREAK
Time for a drinks break. South Africa are 76/1 at the end of 17 overs. QDK and Rassie are holding the forte after Temba Bavuma's dismissal on a dual-paced deck in Pune. The ball isn't coming that nicely onto the blade, and that's the reason why even the likes of Quinny and Rassie are restricting themselves before exploding.
QDK attacks Southee
A boundary and a maximum. A horizontal bat stroke to welcome the Kiwi veteran but smashing one over Southee's head. 12 runs off the first 3 balls.
Phillips, what was what?? Is that even legal ✈️ 👀👀
Southee is here
Tim Southee comes into the attack for the first time in this World Cup. The Kiwi veteran comes into the attack for the 10th over, and has been welcomed with a boundary off Van der Dussen's blade.
BAVUMA'S DONE FOR THE DAY
Another fine start wasted by the South African skipper. Temba Bavuma's promising start has been cursed here. Trent Boult does the job for the Kiwis. Bavuma tries to drive it away from his body but ends up getting a thick outside edge. That was a poor shot by Bavuma and he paid price for it. Mitchell stationed at the first slip takes a clean catch. T Bavuma - 24 (28) | NZ - 38/1 in 8.3 overs.
Temba is cruising!!!
Two more fours in Henry's third over. Bavuma already has smacked four boundaries and a maximum in the 8-over-old context. I guess, this is going to be Bavuma's day in Pune.
First six off the match
Top class from Temba Bavuma as the 400th six of the tournament comes up. Bavuma is looking good and playing the role of the agressor. Honestly, Matt Henry is looking like a ordinary guy today
FOUR!!!!!!
Temba Bavuma smashes a boundary off Matt Henry.
PLAY ON!
Temba Bavuma and QDK up against Trent Boult....
Did you know: New Zealand are on a five-game winning streak against South Africa in ODI World Cups.
