BlackCaps In Trouble; Call Kyle Jamieson As Injury Cover For Injured Pace Duo

New Zealand have recalled tall seamer Kyle Jamieson as an injury cover for the remainder of their ICC World Cup 2023 journey. The BlackCaps, who await a scan on a hamstring issue faced by experienced seamer Matt Henry, have roped in young Jamieson as the potential injury replacement in case the incumbent doesn't recover in time for the next match.

Notably, it's a return for Jamieson to Indian shores after initially making the trip in a similar capacity for Kiwi great Tim Southee. He will reach Bangalore on Thursday (November 2) as New Zealand gear-up for what is now a must-win clash against Asian rivals Pakistan at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday.

Jamieson, who struggled with a career-threatening back injury for the best part of 12 months since last year's Test tour of England, made an impressive comeback via a T20I series in August against UAE. However, with the main pace pack led by spearhead Trent Boult fit and firing, the Kiwis dropped him out of reckoning for the World Cup.

The 28-year-old, regarded as one of the finest young talents in world cricket for his allround skill, is now an injury away from fulfilling his dream of representing the BlackCaps at a men's World Cup for the first time.

Jamieson brought in as cover for Henry, Ferguson

Apart from Henry, whose scan from a hamstring injury to his right leg will come out before the Pakistan clash, the Kiwis are also worried about the injury concerns with express pacer Lockie Ferguson as he strives for recovery from an Achilles issue.

"The severity of Matt’s injury, combined with a short turnaround to Pakistan, meant we couldn’t risk being a bowler down for Saturday," head coach Gary Stead said in a statement issued by New Zealand Cricket (NZC). "Matt (Henry)’s been a world class performer for us in ODI cricket for the past two World Cup cycles so we’ve got our fingers crossed for the scan results later today."

"Kyle (Jamieson)’s on his way over as we speak and we look forward to welcoming him back into the group. He’ll likely train with us on Friday with a mind to being available for Saturday’s game. Kyle (Jamieson) was able to train for two full weeks with us earlier in the tournament and has since played a Plunket Shield match - so we’re confident he’ll be able to hit the ground running," he added.
