IND vs SA - India win by 243 runs!
Another thoroughly professional display of cricket from India results in a one-sided win for the Men in Blue.
It started with Kohli gifting himself 49th ODI century on his 35th birthday. Jadeja made sure to hand something in return as his five-wicket haul sealed a 243-run victory for India.
This win has assured India a top position in the ODI World Cup 2023 when the league stage ends. South Africa too are going to the semis, but this massive defeat will surely hurt their World Cup aspirations as they could get to face India once again in the knockouts.
For today, that was what we had for you. We will again come tomorrow as Sri Lanka aim to remain alive in the tournament and face Bangladesh tomorrow. Until then, Sayonara!
INDIA WIN!!!
Bails fly off again. Kuldeep bowls out Lungi Ngidi. South Africa are all-out for 83. India gain a 243-run victory. This is South Africa's biggest defeat by runs in ODIs.
Five-wicket haul for Jadeja!!!
First five-for Jadeja in the World Cups. He made an easy work of this. The left-armer dismisses Kagiso Rabada caught and bowled to bag the achievement.
Kuldeep makes his presence felt!!!
As easy as it gets. Kuldeep Yadav bowls a googly. Marco Jansen got into the shot early and provided a catching practice to the cover fielder.
If India win this game, which is almost a formality now, they will finish the league stage of the 2023 World Cup as the table-toppers.
"Kohli ko bowling do" chants are back!
Jadeja has already claimed his best figures in the ODI World Cups. This is his first four-wicket haul.
Jadeja having a ball!!!
Keshav Maharaj gets the taste if his own medicine. Jadeja squares him up with an absolute beauty as the woodwork is disturbed again. Seems like it's Jadeja's turn to bag a five-wicket haul.
JADDU knocks out Miller!!!
David Miller comes so far across that he ends up exposing the stumps. The ball beat the inside half of his bat and went on to light up the bails. Jadeja is putting on a show with the ball at the Gardens.
We thought this top-of-the-table clash would be a close affair but India had other plans. The Men in Blue are racing towards another easy win.
Another DRS; Another Wicket!!!
A successful review by India again. Rassie van der Dussen gets trapped in front of the stumps. On-field umpire rules him not out. Rohit took his time to opt for the review, and it happened to be another successful one. Shami takes his second wicket. Another fifer on the cards?
India make right DRS call; Klaasen is OUT!!!
Jadeja pleaded to his captain to take a review. Rohit finally listens to him. It turned out to be a right call in the end as the ball-tracking shows three reds to end Heinrich Klaasen's stay at the crease. And Virat is happier than Jadeja. India are steamrolling South Africa.
This is South Africa's worst first powerplay in the 2023 World Cup. This is the first time in this edition that they have lost three wickets in the starting 10 overs of the innings.
Shami takes down Markram!!!
Mohammad Shami strikes in his first over. And he is doing it in routine. Aiden Markram nicks the ball to KL Rahul as South Africa are having a disastrous batting powerplay.
Rohit's captaincy brilliance!!!
Rohit brings Ravindra Jadeja on early. And the spinner weaves his magic. He beats the outside edge of Bavuma's bat as the ball just turns enough to hit the the middle and off-stump.
AB applauds VK
India have build up a series of dots as the pressure piles up on South Africa. Siraj has just bowled a maiden. Is a wicket coming?
South Africa have gone about their way very cautiously at the start in this World Cup. They are playing in a similar way today. But mind you, they are chasing 327 runs and have lost de Kock who is second to none in acceleration.
We have not seen South African batters struggle much in this World Cup but they are up against the best bowling line-up today. Bumrah and Siraj are making them face the heat.
Rare failure for de Kock!!!
Siraj does not take much to bring out the Cristiano Ronaldo celebration. De Kock was struggling and looked out of sorts. Finally, he chopped the ball back onto the stumps as a rare failure hits him.
Oh Dear! De Kock seems to have injured his ankle. He inside edges the ball back in and is in some pain. South African physio is attending him.
Bumrah at his usual best. He tied de Kock with tight line and length as South Africa manages to score only two runs in the first over.
We are set for the run-chase. It's going to be Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock vs Indian pacers. An enthralling action awaits. Let's dive in to this without much adieu.
Kolkata hails the KING!
South Africa need to pull off a record run-chase at the Eden Gardens if they want to win this. They have the firepower in their batting to do so. But the pitch has slowed down and it will not be easy for their batters to tackle the Indian pacers under lights.
India finish on a high!
17 runs from the last over and India finish with 326 for 5. A century from Kohli, a flying start provided by Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer's courageous 77 and quickfire cameos from Jadeja and SKY - Eden Garden witnessed everything this evening. The pitch has shown it will get tricker as the ball would get softer, meaning the chase of 327 will not a calkwalk for the Proteas. Onto Bumrah, Siraj, Shami, Kuldeep and Jadeja to deliver in Kolkata!
OH DEAR!!!
Ngidi is holding his right hamstring and is down. Not a good sign for South Africa. He is on the floor and the physio runs out to the middle to treat him. Jansen will bowl the last four balls of the innings.
Might maximum from Jadeja in 50th over
Whacked, literally whacked! Ravindra Jadeja picks it early and gets down on one knee to smack the slog sweep right out of the middle of the bat. What a connection and what a sound that made of the bat. It travels like a bird that has set free from the cage and settles deep in the mid-wicket stands.
100 for King on his 35th
Eden goes GAGA as King reaches his 49th ODI hundred in Kolkata on his special day. ODI Hundred number 49 for Virat Kohli. A record-equalling ton and it comes in the city of joy and to make it even more special, it comes on his birthday. What a moment for the modern-day great. Takes off his helmet and celebrates it. Soaks in the applause from the Eden Gardens crowd.
Surya is a goner!
Just when SKY was heating this up at the Gardens, he perishes after playing a false shot. Shamsi bowled a legbreak and Surya gets a top-edge trying to reverse sweep it. QDK, behind the stumps was agile and reacted quickly as he pressed forward and puts in a dive to grab a stunner.
Lungi Ngidi has twisted his ankle and is on the floor. Game is paused for a moment. The team physio of South Africa has come in and is treating the pacer. This is the same thing that happened to Hardik Pandya.
In walks KL Rahul at No 5 in the 37th over. Now the stage is brilliantly set for KL, Suryakumar and Jadeja to come and get going from the word go.
Ngidi does his magic, Shreyas Iyer's gone for 77
Ngidi breaks the partnership. Shreyas Iyer bites the dust after a solid innings. Misses another opportunity to score a hundred. But it doesn't matter. A massive ovation from the crowd as Iyer walks back to the pavilion.
Kohli, Iyer set the stage for India to post 350+
Both India's No 3 & 4 have notched up their individual fifties and set the stage to go big in Kolkata in this clash. With 15 overs still to go, the middle-order batters can easily get to their hundreds, helping India post a total over 350.
Acceleration from India's No 4
After completion of Keshav Maharaj's spell, Shreyas Iyer has put his foot on the accelerator. He was batting at around a strike rate of 45 at one moment but now he is started taking the charge against the Proteas bowlers. India are at 193/2 after 31 overs, at they can easily get to 350+ from here.
Fifty for Shreyas Iyer
Pitched up delivery from Jansen and Shreyas Iyer launches it over mid-off for boundary to get to his fifty. His 3rd ODI in this World Cup.
King Kohli's 71st ODI fifty!
Fifty for the King!
Not the most pleasing looking innings from Virat Kohli, but an important one from the context of the match. The wicket is assisting the spinners and is not an easy one for batting. He has hung in there and should target a big one!
150 runs for India comes in the 26th over.
Kohli, a force, on his 35th
This fine, fine spell from Keshav Maharaj has dried up runs for India. Shreyas Iyer - batting at 24 off 46 balls - needs to up the ante. Kohli, on the other hand, is batting beautifully on his birthday. Meanwhile, on a pitch that is spinning square, Maharaj has just two overs remaining. After the completion of the left-armer's spell, SA could introduce Aiden Markram against India's middle-order.
Kohli survives a close shave!
An appeal for caught behind by de Kock and Maharaj but not given out by the umpire Dharmasena! Bavuma sends it upstairs with a review. Fuller-length delivery angling into the middle stump, pitches and turns away to beat the forward defense of Kohli to the keeper. Kohli looks tensed a bit as the replays come in. Ultra-edge shows that it was the bat hitting the pad before the ball arrived and there was no bat involved. Review lost for South Africa and Kohli, the birthday boy survives!
Kohli looking in ominous touch!
Despite losing 2 wickets, Virat Kohli has looked to play positive cricket and has continued to punish the loose deliveries. He is into the 30s, and will be eyeing a big one here.
100 for INDIA
A single for the Birthday boy as India go past the 100-run mark in the 14th over. India's run-rate is around 7.50 but with two new batters at the crease, India would need to work it out in the middle phase. The next phase of 8 to 10 overs would be important for both the sides.
Both openers back in the hut
A dream delivery from Keshav Maharaj does Shubman Gill, who gets castled with an off-break. The left-arm tweaker beats the right-hander on the dip and turn, Gill misses on the outside edge to get it hit on the right zing bail. Gill couldn't believe it and wants this to be checked. Replays come in, side on replay shows that the ball hit the bails and hence it will be bowled. Gill has to depart now.
Jansen taken to the cleaners!
Seems like India have a plan against South Africa's best bowler. Both Rohit and Gill haven't allowed him to settle in properly. The left-arm seamer is taken to the cleaners left, right and centre.
Bavuma takes a blinder to dismiss RO-HIT!
The Indian skipper looked in ominous touch, but this time he finds the opposition skipper straight at mid-off. That was hit as hard as it could get and credit to Bavuma who had very little time to react. The first blood drawn by Kagiso Rabada.
India off to a flyer ๐๐๐
