In cricket, some moments are more than just stats on a scoreboard, they are stories of courage, determination and incredible spirite. On Saturday, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, young Nitish Reddy etched his name into a budding chapter of Indian cricket, reminiscent of Ajinkya Rahane’s Boxing Day heroics in 2021.

Nitish Reddy and Washington Sundar Recreate Rahane and Jadeja’s Boxing Day Heroics From 2020

India was staring down the barrel at 191/6, still miles away from Australia’s colossal 474. The pressure was immense, and the Aussie bowlers were sniffing blood. Enter Nitish Reddy, a 21-year-old playing only his fourth Test.

With the patience of a seasoned campaigner and the technique of a textbook, he walked in and took guard against Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Scott Boland—names that would make any batter uneasy.

Nitish wasn’t just blocking; he was constructing an innings. Every ball faced was a brick in a wall of defiance. Having fallen short on a few occasions earlier in the series after getting good starts, he wasn’t about to let this chance slip. He notched up a composed fifty, playing to the field and finding gaps like a surgeon with a scalpel.

Nitish wasn’t alone in this fight. Washington Sundar, calm and unflinching, stood at the other end. Together, the duo soaked up the pressure, wearing down the Aussie bowlers. Their unbeaten 126-run stand has been a sight for sore eyes, with Nitish on 96* and Sundar on 50*.

This partnership brought back memories of the 2021 Boxing Day Test when Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja rescued India from the brink. Back then, India was wobbling at 173/5 in response to Australia’s 195. Rahane’s exceptional 112 and Jadeja’s gritty 57 turned the game around, eventually setting the stage for India’s historic Gabba heist.

Now, history seems to be echoing itself. Nitish has stepped into Rahane’s shoes, and Sundar is playing the Jadeja role to perfection.

What stood out in Nitish’s innings wasn’t just the runs, it was the intent. He wasn’t afraid to take on the likes of Starc and Cummins, playing his shots with confidence and flamboyance. He showed maturity beyond his years and anchored the innings while ensuring the scoreboard kept ticking.

Could This Be Another Turning Point?

The current series is finely balanced at 1-1, and every session feels like a mini-battle. Just like Rahane’s knock in 2021 inspired India to script a famous comeback, Nitish’s innings could spark a similar resurgence. This partnership has already brought India within striking distance of Australia’s total, and if the duo carries on, it might tilt the scales in India’s favour.

The Boxing Day Test at the MCG has always had a knack for producing unforgettable moments. Rahane and Jadeja did it three years ago; today, Nitish and Sundar are writing their own script. Who knows? This might just be the knock that fuels India to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Stay tuned! The best might still be to come!
