"Nothing is permanent in this wicked world – not even our troubles." - Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin.
Like almost every other sport, cricket is a game of fortunes. It demands different dynamics from players in various formats; some get the formula right without taking much time. Those who crack the code, build a legacy with enormous success, and with that, the triumphs help them to gather a legion of followers.
However, as the above-mentioned statement, quoted by none other than Chaplin himself, nothing lasts forever. Just like that, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) – who have won 13 titles in 17 years together – seem to have finally lost their authority in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
New Heroes Rising; Veterans Falling Behind!
Unlike many other fans from countries that follow cricket, Indians take the sport very seriously. Hence, whenever things go south, they protest like some crimes have taken place in the middle of the stadium in front of tens of thousands of people.
You may think that at the end of the day, it’s just a sport in the grand scheme of things. Nevertheless, I wish you all the luck if you manage to make the Indians understand this fact. They, unlike others, believe that fandom drives teams to achieve blockbuster success, and CSK, MI and KKR have enjoyed plenty of titles largely due to their prolonged support.
In a competition where every team are so fierce and fearless, winning 13 titles among three sides is not a joke. The likes of fixing, script-writing and whatnot – multiple allegations take the centre stage courtesy of a few sides’ continuous favourable outcomes over the past 17 years. Finally, the situation seems to have arrived when all the nonsense is about to vanish, thanks to the downfall of three big dawgs, that too at the same time.
What's Happening In IPL 2025?
It is obvious that players will lose their prime, and old guards will silently pass on the baton to young and promising superstars. The same thing is happening with CSK, MI and KKR, and the process, safe to say, is not going smoothly as they would have expected.
Position | Teams | Mat | Won | Lost | Pts | NRR |
6 | Kolkata Knight Riders | 5 | 2 | 3 | 4 | -0.056 |
8 | Mumbai Indians | 5 | 1 | 4 | 2 | -0.01 |
9 | Chennai Super Kings | 5 | 1 | 4 | 2 | -0.889 |
[Table - IPL 2025 Points Table, Updated On April 9]
If you look at the current IPL 2025 points table, you will see that Delhi Capitals (DC), Gujarat Titans (GT), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) are at the top of the chart. Among themselves, there is just one title, and that too has been won by the franchise that made their tournament debut just three years ago.
From a neutral point of view, it looks very odd, doesn’t it? Of course, it’s still early days in the ongoing edition, but those who saw the success in the past are not among the title contenders any longer really hit hard. The newly revamped forces have turned themselves into the dominant ones, leaving the OGs behind and far away.
IPL 2.0 Loading?
Sports, sometimes, can be very cruel. If you achieve something as a group, you must prove to the world keep the success going forward to tell the audience that success did not come by fluke. The likes of MI, CSK and KKR have maintained that due to their well-polished leaders.
Do the new chiefs have the qualities to build legacies around them in the future? If they can, surely IPL 2.0 has just begun with the 18th edition of the tournament, and with that, we will soon find out new heroes who will be the torchbearers of the coming era.
