"We played the spin a lot better than we did in Kolkata": Mike Hesson On RCB's Collapse

Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) struggle against spin in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 continued, as they lost to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 21 runs on Wednesday.

The RCB batters found it tough to combat KKR spinners, particularly Suyash Sharma and Varun Chakravarty, who wreaked havoc on them on Wednesday’s reverse fixture much like they did in their first meeting of the tournament.

Speaking about the team's woes against spin, RCB's Director of Cricket, Mike Hesson, acknowledged that they lost too many wickets early on in the innings, despite playing much better this time around than they did in Kolkata. However, he praised Mahipal Lomror and Virat Kohli for dominating the spin bowling and getting RCB to a comfortable position.

"I would say Mahipal and Virat dominated the spin bowling and got us to a point where we were okay, but yeah we lost too many wickets against spin, especially early on. We actually played the spin a lot better than we did in Kolkata. We were able to score runs and take high-percentage options,” said Hesson in the post-match presser.

The former Kiwi coach stated that the run rate was never an issue and that the partnership between Lomror and Kohli was impressive. Hesson admitted that RCB lost too many wickets towards the end of the innings, which cost them the match. He also pointed out that the team threw away wickets instead of being under pressure.

"The run rate pressure was never an issue, the partnership between Mahipal Lomror and Virat Kohli was really good, it got us to a point where we were actually ahead in the game. We then just kept losing wickets, and it was not really from the pressure created, some of them were wickets that we just gave away,"  added the 48-year-old.

The 55-run partnership between Lomror and Kohli was going well for RCB as they were struggling in the powerplay, but the collapse after Kohli's dismissal proved to be their downfall. The loss has left RCB at the fourth spot IPL standings with four wins and as many losses. The team will have to find a way to tackle spin bowling, which has been their Achilles heel this season.
