Ahead of the first One-Day International (ODI) against New Zealand, Pakistan received worrying news in the form of Haris Sohail.

Sohail, who is trying to cement his place in the international side, is likely to miss today's encounter at Rawalpindi after injuring his shoulder during practice on Wednesday.

Sohail collided with vice-captain Shadab Khan during a fielding drill and landed awkwardly on his left shoulder, following which he was taken to the local hospital for scans. The medical panel will assess the batter's condition today ahead of play. However, the team doctor has advised Sohail to rest and not aggravate the injury further.

Besides Sohail, Shan Masood also injured his finger during practice but will be available to play in the ODI.

The 34-year-old has struggled with injuries that kept him out of active cricket for a long time, despite being once rated as Pakistan's next big thing. However, the Shahid Afridi-led selection panel recalled Sohail for the home series against New Zealand in January, where the batter accumulated 64 runs.

Sohail, in 45 ODIs for Pakistan, has amassed 1,749 runs and picked up 11 wickets since 2013.

Both Pakistan and New Zealand will play a five-match ODI series, after the T20I series ended in a 2-2 draw.
