With the start of the new cricketing calendar year, all eyes are now on the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which is set to be played in India and Sri Lanka. The prestigious cricket biennial will kick off next month. Meanwhile, all teams are gearing up for the tournament.

In the same line of events, the T20 World Cup 2021 champions, Australia have also announced their 15-men provision squad for the tournament’s upcoming edition. There will be a few new faces in Australia’s T20 WC squad, including the likes of Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Matthew Short, and Matthew Kuhnemann.

Notably, this quartet wasn’t a part of Australia’s squad in the T20 World Cup 2024. That said, here we’ll have a look at Australia’s squad in 2024 edition and where are the players now.

Mitchell Marsh

The star all-rounder Mitchell led the team in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies. He replaced the former skipper Aaron Finch who led the Aussie side in the T20 World Cup 2022 at home. However, the Marsh-led Aussie side couldn’t make it to the knockouts in World T20 2024 as they were knocked out of the tournament in group stage

Marsh will be leading Australia again in T20 World Cup 2026 as he has been named skipper of the provisional World Cup squad.

Pat Cummins

Australia’s Test and ODI skipper Pat Cummins has also been a mainstay in the T20Is. The senior was a key part of the Aussie bowling attack in the T20 World Cup 2024. Though, the veteran pacer has been included in the provisional squad for the upcoming edition but his struggle with injuries is yet to confirm his availability in the tournament.

Josh Hazlewood

Another veteran Josh Hazlewood was also a vital cog in the wheel for Australia’s pace attack in the last edition. He has also been struggling with the injuries, which forced him to sit out of the entire Ashes 2025-26

But the selectors seem to be optimistic about his availability for the T20 World Cup 2026. They have also included him in Australia’s provision squad for the tournament.

Tim David

The power-hitting all-rounder Tim David was one of the key elements in the Australian squad for the World T20 2024. Though, he didn’t impress much with the bat in the tournament, scoring 61 runs in five innings, with an average of 15.25.

The selectors have invested their trust once again in Tim David, picking him in the provision squad for the 2026 edition.

Glenn Maxwell

The veteran all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was a key part of Australia’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad. He was the fourth leading run-scorer for Australia in the tournament’s ninth edition. The then 35-year-old scored 132 runs in six innings, with an average of 26.40, including a half-century.

He has also been included in the squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 in the role of a power-hitting all-rounder. He could also be a great asset for the Aussies in the spin-friendly conditions of India and Sri Lanka.

Travis Head

The swashbuckling opener Travis Head was the top performer with the bat for Australia in the T20 World Cup 2024. He ended up as the leading run-scorer for his side in the tournament. The southpaw scored 255 runs in seven innings, averaging 42.50, with two half-centuries, including an unbeaten appearance.

Head will also be there in the opening role for his side in the tournament’s upcoming edition. He is expected to open the innings for Australia with skipper Mitchell Marsh

Cameron Green

The 6’7” tall all-rounder was a part of the Australian squad in the T20 World Cup 2024. However, he didn’t get a game to feature throughout the tournament. But his form in the shortest format of the game after the previous World Cup could be a key element in Australia’s success in the 2026 edition.

As a part of the T20 World Cup 2026 squad, he is expected to play a crucial role with the bat on the batting-friendly surfaces in India. His IPL experience might also help him to cope up with the Indian conditions.

Nathan Ellis

The New South Wales pacer was picked as the fourth pace-bowling option in Australia’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad. He played in three games for his side, picking four wickets in three innings, including the best bowling figures of 2/28 in a game.

After two years, Ellis has been picked as one of the key pacers in the Aussie bowling attack for the T20 World Cup 2026. If any of the veteran pacers, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood fails to make it to the XI due to injury, Ellis will be a perfect option for Australia.

Ashton Agar

The Melbourne-born spinner was a part of Australia’s squad in the World T20’s USA and West Indies edition, but got to play only in two games. He scalped one wicket in two innings. Furthermore, his T20I involvement has been limited to the Big Bash League.

Meanwhile, he has not been included in the provisional squad for the upcoming World T20 2026. Agar played his last T20 game for the Perth Scorchers against Sydney Thunder on December 30, 2025 in the ongoing BBL 2025-26.

Marcus Stoinis

The prolific all-rounder from Perth, Marcus Stoinis impressed with all-round outings for Australia in the T20 World Cup 2024. He was the third leading run-scorer for his side, scoring 169 runs in five innings, with an average of 42.25, having a strike rate of 164.07, including two half-centuries.

Stoinis will also be a part of the Australian mix for the upcoming World T20 in India and Sri Lanka. He will be one of the most reliable all-rounder options for the yellow outfits in the marquee international tournament.

Mitchell Starc

The veteran pacer Mitchell Starc was a part of Australia’s bowling attack in the T20 World Cup 2024 but looked a bit off colour with his performances. He could scalp only five wickets in five innings.

Starc announced his retirement from the shortest format of the game to focus on Tests and ODIs. He has been replaced by the other pace-bowling options like Xavier Bartlett and Nathan Ellis in Australia's next World T20 plans.

Matthew Wade

The Tasmania veteran, Matthew Wade played as wicketkeeper-batter for Australia in the T20 World Cup 2024. He scored 27 runs in four innings, with an average of 13.50.

Having Josh Inglis more regularly, the selectors have moved on from Matthew Wade as he has not been picked in the provisional squad for the T20 World Cup 2026.

David Warner

The former opener, David Warner was one of the top performers with the bat for his side in the last T20 World Cup. He ended up as the second leading run-scorer for Australia, following Travis Head. Warner scored 178 runs in seven innings, with an average of 29.66, hitting two half-centuries.

Following his retirement across all formats in international cricket last year, the Aussie management has decided to go ahead with the opening pair of Marsh and Head for the upcoming edition.

Josh Inglis

The England-born wicketkeeper-batter was a part of the Australian squad in the T20 World Cup 2024, but he returned home without getting any game in the tournament.

Now, the 30-year-old has been picked as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in the Aussie squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.

Adam Zampa

The star leg-spinner Adam Zampa was the best performer with the ball for his side in the T20 World Cup 2024. He was the leading wicket-taker for Australia in the tournament, claiming 13 wickets in seven innings, including a four-wicket haul and a bowling strike rate of 12.92.

Zampa will also be a key part of Australia’s spin mix in the T20 World Cup 2026. He could be a game-changing factor for his side considering the sub-continent’s spin-friendly conditions.
