Punjab Kings players during IPL 2025 [Source: @IPL/x]
Dear Punjab Kings,
I’ve been with you since the very beginning, since 2008 when you were still Kings XI Punjab, back when the league was shiny and new, and every single one of my friends were switching teams like they would switch TV channels. But not me. I chose you, and I stayed, throughout the highs and the heartbreaks (mostly heartbreaks), and through the false hopes and crushing defeats. All because it meant something.
Being a Punjab Kings fan is not for the faint-hearted. It’s a journey of heartbreak stitched into every summer. Except for the madness of 2008 and the blitzkrieg of 2014, we’ve mostly lived in the shadows. And post-2014? We weren’t just underdogs; we became the league’s afterthought. Winning the IPL felt like a myth. Finishing mid-table became our Everest, and avoiding the bottom spot turned into our version of success. And yet, even those modest dreams slipped through our fingers more times than I can count.
But somehow, through all the noise and the trolling, fans like me never left. We became experts in pain and masters of patience. And now, in 2025, under the guidance of the ever-so charismatic Shreyas Iyer, we have broken through the fog.
As it happened, we didn’t just beat Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier. We dismantled a dynasty. We turned destiny on its head. With a squad full of uncapped warriors taking on a lineup of global giants, stepping into the unfamiliar waters of a high-stakes playoff while MI strolled in like it was just a routine, and chasing 204 against a side that had never lost while defending 200+, we defied logic, legacy, and everything in between. And somehow, we rewrote our narrative and marched into a final. Our first in over a decade, and just the second in the IPL’s 18-year saga.
Do you understand what that means to us?
We, the fanbase that’s known nothing but mediocrity and moral victories, now have a date with glory. And you know what? Even if we lose tomorrow, even if we fall short at the last hurdle, I won’t be gutted. Because this run, this comeback, this roar from the ruins, it has already made my heart full.
And while I’m not an RCB fan, not by any means, I won’t be bitter. Because if there’s one man whose loyalty and obsession for his franchise vastly exceeds our own, it’s Virat Kohli. No one in IPL history has carried a team on his shoulders like he has. If we lose to that, I can live with it.
But Punjab Kings, just know this, you have already won us. Every player, every run, every dive, every heartbreak and every hope, it has all been worth it. This team, this moment, this magic, it’s ours.
Carry our love into the final. Make history, or die trying. No matter what happens at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, our hearts beat Red forever ❤️❤️❤️.
Yours in madness,
A Punjab Kings loyalist
Sadda Punjab!
