Irfan Pathan has berated the Mumbai Indians franchise for losing to Punjab Kings in the second qualifier and bowing out of the IPL 2025 race. The former Indian all-rounder questioned team’s tactics and disappointing performance, despite boasting of several match-winning players like Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and others.
Taking to X a day after Punjab Kings’ exhilarating run-chase at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, Pathan also consoled Mumbai Indians fans for a disappointing exit from the season.
Pathan says not many has as many match-winners as MI
On Monday, June 2, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan signified the presence of Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and New Zealand bowling icons Mitchell Santner and Trent Boult in the Mumbai Indians line-up. The cricketer-turned-commentator added that despite having so many match-winners in a single team, the Mumbai Indians still failed to lift the IPL 2025 title by falling short to Punjab Kings in the second qualifier.
Taking to X, he wrote:
“Bumrah – number 1 Surya – number 1 T20 batter Rohit Sharma – 5 trophies as captain Hardik – premier all-rounder Santner – best left-arm spinner Trent Boult – highest 1st-over wicket-taker Despite having so many match-winners, still not able to win the IPL trophy. Mumbai fans must be very disappointed. MI will surely look into things deeply — you don’t get these kinds of match-winners in many T20 teams.”
It is worth noting that Mumbai Indians qualified for the IPL 2025 playoffs by finishing fourth on the points table with eight wins and six defeats from 14 matches. They managed to secure just a solitary win in their first five games before bouncing back with seven wins off their next nine fixtures.
The likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah played a significant role in the resurrection of Mumbai Indians in the second half of the IPL 2025 season.
