India’s all-format greats Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma made their respective returns to the national playing XI for the first ODI of their home series against New Zealand on Saturday, January 11. Having already retired from Tests and T20Is, the two legendary Indian batters continue to be celebrated for their immense contributions in the ODI format, with their presence alone reflecting an era of sustained excellence in Indian cricket.

Roughly a month after anchoring Team India’s ODI series win against South Africa at home, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have now received a special felicitation at the halfway stage of the series-opening game against New Zealand at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.

With New Zealand batting first, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were seen at their animated best on the field. The two legendary Indian batters even seemingly took captaincy responsibility between overs, as they were spotted guiding young teammate and regular skipper Shubman Gill at one stage of the New Zealand innings.

Nonetheless, New Zealand amassed 300-8 after losing the toss and batting first. Both openers Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls bludgeoned swift half-centuries during their record 117-run opening partnership. Daryl Mitchell top-scored with a cracking 84 to provide the slog-overs impetus to the visitors.

For India, fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna picked up two wickets apiece.
