Shreyas Iyer flexed his fitness by pulling off a sensational direct hit run out to remove New Zealand interim captain Michael Bracewell in the first ODI of India’s three-match series at home. Making his return to the Indian national squad for the first time since recovering from the injury he sustained in Australia a few months ago, a quick Shreyas Iyer charged in from the boundary to curtail Bracewell’s threatening knock in the slog overs.

Earlier in the game, the Indian ODI vice-captain also took a sharp catch off Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling to dismiss Glenn Phillips after Team India had won the toss and opted to field first.

Shreyas Iyer justifies injury return with agile fielding

Shreyas Iyer justified his return to the Indian team after a two-month injury layoff with some exceptional fielding against New Zealand in the first ODI at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. After snaring a sharp catch at point in the 34th over of the New Zealand innings to dismiss Glenn Phillips, the seasoned Indian pro also pulled out a sensational direct hit run out.

Stationed at the log-on boundary, Shreyas Iyer charged in and trapped New Zealand’s stand-in skipper Michael Bracewell at the non-strikers end with a bullseye.

Shreyas Iyer’s bullet throw from inside the inner circle left New Zealand juggling for late runs at 237-6 in 43 overs, as a well-set Bracewell made his way back to the sheds after making 16 from 18 balls with a boundary.

Indian pacers fight back after New Zealand’s record stand

New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls started off the match by compiling 117 runs together for the first wicket in just 21.4 overs, with both cricketers smearing swift half-centuries. The partnership marked one of New Zealand’s highest opening stands against India in India.

However, Mohammed Siraj and Harshit Rana responded back with a slew of wickets, ably aided by fellow paceman Prasidh Krishna and seasoned spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
