Two commentators arguing inside a commentary box is not a new thing in Indian cricket, and it has happened before, and will happen in the future as well. When multiple commentators sit together, their ideologies are different and clashes are bound to take place, and this happened between Varun Aaron and Sanjay Bangar.
The argument between two brilliant cricketing minds occurred during the first ODI match between India and New Zealand in Vadodara. The incident happened during the 12th over of the Kiwi innings when Washington Sundar was bowling to Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls, and KL Rahul gave him bowling advice in Hindi.
Contrary views about language between Aaron and Bangar
Sundar was ineffective in his first spell as the spinner was bowling it quicker through the air, making it easier for the two batters to play him. Hence, KL Rahul advised him to bowl it slower through the air.
“Medium pacer jaise daal rahe ho yar, spinner ho, thoda ball ko dheema fekho.”
Aaron suggested that instead of giving tips in Hindi, KL Rahul could have used Tamil to easily communicate with Washington Sundar, as the all-rounder hails from Chennai. He asked his co-commentator, Sanjay Bangar to give his opinion on the same, but the former cricketer had different views.
"Mai rashtra bhasha me believe karta hun (I believe in national language - Hindi)," indirectly saying that language doesn't matter.
Is Varun Aaron right regarding the communication in Tamil?
Cricket in India is played by players who hail from different states, and naturally, when players travel together, they learn different languages. However, on a cricket field, it is easier to communicate in a language that is easier for you to understand.
Sundar was born and brought up in Chennai, and has played the majority of his cricket in South India. Hence, for him, Tamil is the easiest language to communicate in. KL Rahul, hailing from Karnataka, has knowledge of Tamil, and giving advice in one’s native language makes the job easier for the one listening. Hence, in this regards, Aaron wasn't entirely wrong.
The reason why KL Rahul gave advise to Sundar
In his first spell against the Kiwis, Sundar was pushing the ball quicker through the air, and hence, was not getting the purchase from the surface. He conceded 27 runs in the first five overs, at an economy of 5.40, and it made Devon Conway and Nicholls’ job easier as the two batters didn’t need to do anything silly against Sundar, as singles and doubles were easily available.
As a result, KL Rahul gave an advise to change his tactics against the two Kiwi opening batters.
