Former Indian cricketer Priyank Panchal has claimed that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's retirement from T20Is and Tests was the best thing to happen to ODIs. According to him, these two legends of the game revived the format, as they have their complete focus on the format that was dying.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from T20Is after India’s incredible victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup and stepped down from Test cricket after they failed to deliver during the tour of Australia. Now that they exclusively play ODIs and their workload is a lot less, they have had an exceptional run.
“Virat and Rohit retiring from the other two formats was the best thing that could’ve happened to ODI cricket. The 50-overs game, which seemed to be in its final trenches, has suddenly been revived because two of India’s biggest legends play exclusively that format,” Panchal tweeted.
Many fans echoed the Gujarat-born cricketer’s thoughts as Virat and Rohit’s performances in recent times have been spectacular. They were at the top of their game during the ODIs against Australia and followed it up with another great performance in the series against South Africa.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy
After that, the two legends of the game also returned to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s one-day domestic competition, after many years. There, too, they left no stone unturned as they maintained their consistency to score valuable runs for their respective teams.
Both scored 100s in their first matches, and Virat followed it with a fifty in the second game. This was also important as many eyes turned towards this tournament, with fans flooding the stadium to see their favourite stars take the field.
Now, these two will be back in action when India takes on New Zealand in the next assignment. This will be an important series as Virat and Rohit won’t play in the Indian colours for a little while after this, and they would want to make the most out of this opportunity.
The road to the 2027 World Cup is clear for the two legends
There were some concerns over Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s spots in the team for the World Cup next year. But to the fans’ relief, that worry seems to be over. Both of them have proved why they are two of the greatest cricketers India has ever produced.
Looking ahead, they might have confirmed their berth for the World Cup. However, since these two do not play a lot of competitive cricket any more, they will have to keep a check on their fitness and their form as well. Everyone will have a keen interest in how their future pans out.
