Indian vice-vaptain Smriti Mandhana has finally spoken openly about the rumours surrounding her wedding to music composer Palash Muchhal.
The wedding, which was supposed to happen on November 23, had been postponed after Smriti’s father, Srinivas, suddenly fell ill and had to be taken to a hospital in their hometown, Sangli.
The next day, Palash also fell sick and was admitted to the hospital. Although both recovered, no new wedding date was announced, which led to a lot of gossip.
On December 7, Smriti shared an Instagram story saying she is a private person but felt the need to clear the confusion.
Smriti Mandhana requests privacy of both families
She confirmed that the wedding has been called off. She requested everyone to stop the speculation and respect the privacy of both families as they move on. She wrote,
"Over the past few weeks there has been plenty of speculation around my life and I feel it is important for me to speak out at this time. I am a very private person and I would like to keep it that way but I need to clarify that the wedding is called off.
I would like to close this matter here and implore all of you to do the same. I request you to please respect the privacy of both families at this time and allow us the space to process and move on at our own pace.
I believe there is a higher purpose driving us all and for me that has always been representing my country at the highest level. I hope to continue to play and win trophies for India for as long as possible and that is where my focus will forever be. Thank you for all your support. It's time to move forward."
Meanwhile, fans noticed several hints online before the official announcement. Soon after, she also removed all wedding-related posts from her accounts, which only fuelled speculation that something had changed.
Family members on both sides continued to insist that the initial postponement happened strictly because of the health emergencies
Adding to the curiosity, just a day before Smriti confirmed the news, she posted a paid advertisement for a toothpaste brand on Instagram. Fans quickly pointed out that she was not wearing her engagement ring in the video.
It wasn’t clear whether the ad had been recorded before the engagement or after, but the missing ring became a talking point and sparked even more discussions online.
Now that Smriti has officially confirmed that the wedding is off, the rumours have finally been put to rest. She has asked the public and media to give both families the space they need and allow them to move ahead in their own time.
