In a highly-anticipated encounter at Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday (May 21), Suryakumar Yadav delivered a masterclass under pressure, steering Mumbai Indians (MI) into the IPL 2025 Playoffs with a dominant 59-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC).

 Rain-Hit Ceremony, Heartwarming Gesture

SKY played a much-needed unbeaten 73-run knock in just 43 balls, that earned him the Player of the Match award. This was his first Player of the Match award of the season. After receiving the award, he gave a touching tribute to his wife.

"My wife told me a sweet story today. She said you have got all the awards except Player of the Match. So this award is special today, and this trophy is for her. "She waits for such moments, and we celebrate it obviously, looking forward to it," he said.

The post-match presentation was not short of drama either. Just as the ceremony was about to begin, a light drizzle began falling over the Wankhede. Another heartwarming moment that caught the camera and has gone viral was when Suryakumar invited Harsha Bhogle to share his umbrella, shielding him from the rain as he accepted the award.

Suryakumar Anchors MI After Early Collapse

After being invited to bat first, MI found themselves in early trouble as the top-order stumbled. But Suryakumar, calm under pressure, anchored the innings and lifted his side to a formidable total of 180/5. He scored an unbeaten 73 off just 43 balls, striking seven boundaries and four sixes. A late quickfire cameo from Naman Dhir (24 off 8) added vital runs in the death overs.

MI Still In The Race For Top 2

With this win, MI now sit at fourth place on the IPL 2025 points table with 16 points, just behind GT (18 points), RCB (17), and PBKS (17). With one league game remaining, MI have a chance to climb further, depending on the outcomes of other matches.

Should MI win their final game and at least two of the teams above them falter, they could still finish in the top two. Hardik Pandya and his men will next play against PBKS on May 26, 2025.
