In a significant development, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to discuss a significant decision regarding India and Pakistan’s potential clash at the T20 World Cup 2026 during its upcoming annual meeting from July 17 to 20.

BCCI Unlikely To Support Group-Stage Clash At T20 World Cup 2026

Traditionally, India and Pakistan have been placed in the same group in ICC events, ensuring a highly anticipated face-off during the group stage. However, according to a report by PTI, the ICC may now deviate from that norm amid rapidly deteriorating relations between the two countries. This potential change means the two teams may only meet if both reach the knockout rounds of the tournament.

According to the reports by PTI as quoted Times Now,  the BCCI has likely confirmed that this matter is likely to be raised at the ICC’s annual conference.

"The issue is bound to come up for discussion at the annual conference. While prospect of India and Pakistan not playing in ICC knockouts is unlikely, not drawing them in the same group, which has been the norm at ICC events, is a possibility," a source in the BCCI told PTI.

This decision if made is because of heightened geopolitical tension between India and Pakistan. Ties have reached a critical low following alleged unprovoked attack on Indian borders. In retaliation, the Indian Army launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror base camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Although both nations have officially agreed to a ceasefire, diplomatic disengagement by India continues, with sports being one of the latest areas to reflect the divide.

Asia Cup 2025 Also In Doubt

The BCCI is also reportedly contemplating a withdrawal from the Asia Cup 2025, expected to be held in September.

If India pulls out, the Asia Cup may not be held at all, given India's central role in attracting viewership and commercial value. However, BCCI secretary has downplayed speculation, saying, "We haven’t given much thought to the Asia Cup 2025 as of now. Our current focus is on successfully concluding the IPL 2025 and preparing for the upcoming India vs England series."

A final call on both the T20 World Cup groupings and the Asia Cup participation is likely to emerge following the ICC’s July conference. All eyes will be on what could become a defining moment in Indo-Pak cricket rivalry.
