In a stunning turn of events, Delhi Capitals etched their name into an unenviable Indian Premier League (IPL) record on Wednesday, becoming the first team in the tournament’s 18-year history to make a record like that.

Notably, Delhi became the first team to miss the playoffs after winning their first four matches. Their campaign ended with a crushing 59-run defeat to the Mumbai Indians, who clinched the final playoff berth with the victory.

Mumbai Dominate Delhi To Crash Them Out Of Playoff Race

Chasing a target of 182, Delhi, missing regular skipper Axar Patel—collapsed to a meagre 121 all out in 19.2 overs. Youngster Sameer Rizvi (39) top-scored in a dismal batting display, while Vipraj Nigam (20) and Ashutosh Sharma (18) offered brief resistance.

Mumbai’s bowling attack proved relentless. Mitchell Santner starred with 3/11, including Rizvi’s wicket, while Jasprit Bumrah’s fiery spell (3/12) dismantled Delhi’s lower order.

Season of Contrasts for Delhi

For the unaware, Delhi’s campaign began as a title contender, racing to four consecutive wins and securing six victories in their first eight matches. However, their momentum unravelled spectacularly in the second half of the tournament, with four losses and a no-result in their final five games. Stranded on 13 points with one match remaining, Delhi’s playoff hopes evaporated in Mumbai.

The loss extended Delhi’s woes against Mumbai, marking their 21st IPL defeat to the five-time champions, the joint-second-highest losing streak against a single opponent in league history.

Though Delhi is left with a game with Punjab Kings on Saturday, May 24, it is a dead-rubber encounter with PBKS already sealing the playoffs spot and aiming for the top while DC eye farewell.
