Budget retail chain SuperK has raised ₹100 crore (approximately $12 million) in a Series B funding round. The investment was co-led by Binny Bansal's 3STATE Ventures and CaratLane founder Mithun Sacheti, with participation from Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill and existing backers Blume Ventures and Xeed Ventures.

Founded in 2020 and headquartered in Andhra Pradesh, SuperK operates a network of 130 franchisee-led stores across more than 80 small towns.

Where Did Shubman Gill Invest?

Primarily, SuperK focuses on providing affordable groceries and household essentials, targeting India's vast but underserved $600 billion grocery market, where organised retail penetration is below 5%, primarily in Tier-II cities and beyond.

Notably, SuperK was founded by Anil Thontepu and Neeraj Menta, batchmates from BITS Pilani and both second-time entrepreneurs with Shubman Gill adding to the young energy as an investor. Thontepu previously led product and growth at Kaodim, Hike, and PhonePe. Menta co-founded Hungerbox and built products at Flipkart and Zeta (Directi).

Shubman Gill As An Investor

Though Gill has been in the news for having a stake in SuperK, the 25-year-old has been in the financial game for a long time. Along with Preity Zinta, Shubman Gill co-founded Drive Fitt in 2024, which is a fitness chain that blends cricket-inspired training with regular fitness routines. Notably, the company aims to establish 300 fitness centres across India through franchising.

Shubman Gill also expanded his global presence by investing in Vicus Ventures, a U.S.-based venture capital firm, earlier, where he marked his entry into start-up funding and disruptive innovation. This partnership has allowed him to engage with international business networks and explore venture incubation. Vicus Ventures primarily focuses on sectors such as sports-tech, wellness, and consumer brands—areas that strongly reflect Gill’s personal brand and public identity.

Currently, Gill is leading the Indian team in England, where the Men in Blue are trailing behind 2-1. The ongoing Manchester Test could be a potential series-decider as India will have to clinch the match to keep the five-match series alive.
