Mir Belayet Hossain, a respected figure in Bangladeshi cricket and a key contributor to the sport’s early development in the country, has passed away. His death marks the end of an era for Bangladesh’s domestic cricket, where he was widely admired for his skills as a wicketkeeper and batter, as well as for his leadership off the field.

Born on July 1, 1955, in Mymensingh, Hossain passed away at the age of 70. His deep passion for the game and early commitment to it helped shape the foundations of what would later become a thriving cricket culture.

Hossain leaves behind legacy as a cricketer and an umpire

Despite the lack of international exposure during his playing years, due to Bangladesh not having achieved Test status at the time, Hossain carved a niche for himself as a domestic stalwart and a steady presence behind the stumps.

Hossain’s cricketing career is highlighted by his participation in the 1979 ICC Trophy, Bangladesh’s first major international tournament. Serving as the team’s wicketkeeper, he played a crucial role in that campaign, as Bangladesh began its journey toward global cricket recognition.

Domestic and umpiring career

Throughout his life, Mir Belayet Hossain remained deeply committed to cricket, having played for Abahani, Kalabagan, Rupali Bank, Agrani Bank and Dhanmondi Club in Dhaka's club circuit, as well as for Mymensingh District in the National Cricket Championship, a league match of Bangladesh, much like that of BPL.

After retiring from playing, Hossain remained deeply involved in cricket, serving as a match referee for 79 first-class, 81 List A, and one T20 match. His dedication to the sport also extended to a role as a regional development manager for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

As the cricketing community mourns his loss, Mir Belayet Hossain’s memory will continue to inspire the current and future generations of players who walk the path he helped to pave.
