KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal built a statement partnership of 94 runs opening stand on Day 1 of England vs India 4th Test at Manchester. The duo's opening heroics eased much pressure from the rest of the top and middle order, as by the end of Day 1, India cruised to 264/4.
Speaking of the openers and their significant contributions, former cricketer and current commentator Aakash Chopra discussed the positives of the duo while also sliding in a 'haven't missed Rohit Sharma' phrase.
Aakash Chopra Praises Indian Duo's Heroics
Speaking in a video on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra lauded Jaiswal's gameplay and shared his condolences for KL Rahul's missed half-century. However, Chopra didn't mince words while praising the duo as a whole.
"Yashasvi played very cautiously. He was very, very selective about the shots to play. KL Rahul was unfortunate to miss his half-century, but it was a significant opening partnership. Now you can probably say that we haven't missed Rohit Sharma that much because both Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul have done a phenomenal job," Aakash Chopra said.
Chopra Lauds Openers' Grit
Jaiswal managed to bag a gritty 58 off 107 balls while KL Rahul fell for 46 off 98 deliveries to Chris Woakes. The openers were slow, yet it was a masterclass in building an innings in front of England pacers and English overcast conditions.
"It was a good opening partnership. Both KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal played well. That was good because the conditions were overcast. The ball wasn't moving that much, but it was moving. You lost the toss and were asked to bat first, and you didn't lose a single wicket in the first session. This has happened after a very long time in England," Chopra added.
Notably, in this series so far, Jaiswal has bagged 291 runs at an average of 41.57, while KL Rahul boasts 421 runs at an average of 60.14, with two centuries and one half-century to his name.
India, having lost four wickets and having Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur at the crease, will look to extend the lead as England will try to dampen India's chances to bat for a whole day on Day 2 at Manchester.
