CSK To Go All Out To Retain MS Dhoni Even If BCCI Allows Two Retentions

The Board of Control for Cricket In India (BCCI) is yet to declare the retention rules for the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025). The franchises have already had a couple of meetings where they clarified to the authorities the number of players and which players they want to retain. However, the final decision from BCCI is still pending.

CSK wanted to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player

Reports were there that while some teams do not want to keep even a single player from their current squads, others want the number of retentions to be increased to eight. Although it is stated that BCCI is thinking about keeping the retentions to 4-6 players, everything will be cleared once and if a formal statement comes from the authorities. The reports also say that BCCI is working hard to bring back the IPL rule, which classifies internationally retired for more than five years as 'uncapped'.

If the rumours are to be believed, Chennai Super Kings were desperate and pushed the BCCI intently to reinstate the regulation allowing retired players to be retained as 'Uncapped' players. The franchise's proposal was to hold on to their legendary batter and former skipper, MS Dhoni. Notably, if this regulation comes back, it will allow CSK to retain MSD for a lower price.

As reported by Cricbuzz, BCCI has scheduled the release of retention guidelines for the end of September, changing from the August dates. The BCCI is reportedly giving deep thought to MS Dhoni's one-year extension, which will benefit both the franchise and the league as a whole.

CSK will go all-out to keep MS Dhoni for IPL 2025

But then, as reported by Sportstak, CSK is desperate to retain MS Dhoni. They would keep him in the squad even if BCCI allows two retentions ahead of the tournament.

Regarding the cost of the reported players, BCCI might deduct balances from the purses of the franchises depending on how many players they keep rather than the type of players. This will allow the teams to choose how much they want to pay to the players they retain ahead of IPL 2025. If this regulation is instilled, then BCCI will be the only one to decide Dhoni's payment for the upcoming season if he were to remain capped or uncapped.
