The BCCI has released the retention rules for the IPL 2025. The rules allow each franchise to retain six players from the current squad via the traditional retention policy or by using RTMs. However, one uncapped player must be on the retention list, and the maximum number of uncapped players is two.
While this rule will allow most teams to keep their core intact, the franchises will have to release some key players. Here are three players CSK could have retained if more retentions were allowed.
3. Maheesh Theekshana

The Sri Lankan spinner has established himself as an important part of the team's bowling plans in the last three seasons. Maheesh Theekshana's ability to take up the ball and deliver crucial overs for the team at any stage of the game makes him an integral part of the team. However, CSK might have to release him as they won't be able to keep more than six players in their team ahead of the mega auction.
2. Rachin Ravindra
The Kiwi all-rounder showed great promise during his first season with CSK in IPL 2024. Even though his performances were not consistent, Rachin Ravindra looked like a good prospect for the future. However, in order to keep their core solid, CSK might have to release Rachin Ravindra ahead of the mega auction.
1. Daryl Mitchell

After the retirement of Ambati Rayudu, CSK were looking for a player who could add depth and dynamism to their middle-order. It looked like they found Daryl Mitchell a perfect fit for the role. The New Zealand batter played a couple of good knocks under pressure and made himself a valuable part of the team. However, due to the limitations on the number of players to be retained, Mitchell might released by CSK.
