Just like his teammate, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma’s place in the ODI squad was also in jeopardy heading into the South Africa series. However, just like Kohli, Rohit showed his class against the Proteas bowling unit, and smacked two fifties in the series to silence his critics in the best possible way.
He looked ominous as Rohit showed his class in the series decider, and it was his crucial fifty that sealed the game for India. After capturing the gruelling ODIs against one of the best white-ball sides, Team India had a mini celebration in their hotel as youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal was asked to cut the cake.
Kohli, too, was called up for the celebration as Jaiswal offered him a slice of cake, but Kohli urged the youngster to give it to Rohit first, since the duo stitched a match-winning opening partnership. However, Rohit refused to eat the cake, and he jokingly stated, “mai phir se mota ho jaunga (I’ll become fat again).”
Rohit attains peak fitness to take part in 2027 World Cup
One major reason why Rohit straightaway declined the chance to eat the cake is that the star batter had been working on his physical fitness during his time away from the game. At 38, Rohit is not getting any younger, and by the time the World Cup arrives in 2027, he’ll be 40.
Hence, to stay fit, Rohit took an intensive training programme under the supervision of Abhishek Nayyar, and gave up on his favourite food items as Nayyar revealed that Rohit lost 11 kgs leading upto the Australian tour in October.
The training program worked wonders as Rohit scored a brilliant hundred in the SCG ODI against Australia and was adjudged the Player of the Series. Moreover, he also smacked two fifties against the Proteas, showcasing his peak fitness.
