Cameron Green was expected to be the highest-earning player in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 mini auction. He did get a massive price of ₹25.2 crores from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after an intense bidding war with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

But before KKR bagged the star all-rounder, the Mumbai Indians (MI) started the bidding and even raised the stakes to ₹2.4 crores with a remaining purse of ₹2.75 crores.

The team owner, Aakash Ambani, hilariously raised his hand just for fun after the bidding had gone past their remaining purse. This lightened the mood in the auction room, as even the auctioneer gave a laugh.

Cameron Green becomes the third-most expensive player in IPL auctions

The Australian all-rounder was the player to watch out for going into the auction. KKR were predicted to bag him, as they had the biggest remaining purse, and they did get him at an incredible price of ₹25.2 crores.

Only Rishabh Pant (₹27 crores) and Shreyas Iyer (₹26.75 crores) have gone for a higher amount during the player auctions, making Green the third-most expensive player in the history of IPL. He is also the costliest overseas player in the history of the tournament.

However, under IPL’s new regulations, no overseas player will get over ₹18 crores in the mini auction, regardless of how high franchises push the bidding. The ceiling was introduced by the BCCI during the 2025 mega auction. It is the same amount as the highest retention slab from the previous mega auction, effectively keeping the salaries of overseas players at a consistent maximum level.

The surplus amount is transferred to the BCCI’s player welfare fund. In this case, the BCCI will receive ₹7.2 crores for player welfare, while Green will get a salary of ₹18 crores from KKR.
