IPL 2026 Auction live updates: Cameron Green clears air!

Australia star all-rounder Cameron Green has cleared the air about why he was listed as a “pure batter” for the IPL 2026 auction, even though he is well known as an all-rounder. According to Green, the reason is very simple; it was just a paperwork mistake, not a change in his role or a concern about his fitness.

"I don't know if my manager would like to hear this, but there was a stuff-up on his end. He didn't mean to say 'batter'. I think he accidentally selected the wrong box. It was pretty funny how it's all played out, but it was actually a stuff-up on his end," he said.

Clearly, Green has upped his stakes after confirming that he will be available as an all-rounder!!

IPL 2026 Auction live: The new 'Maximum Fee' cap rule explained

The IPL 2026 mini-auction brings in a new rule to maintain financial balance among franchises, enforcing the BCCI’s “maximum fee” cap for overseas players.

  • Under this rule, overseas players cannot earn more than ₹18 crore, even if franchises bid higher during the auction.
  • Teams are allowed to bid above ₹18 crore, but the player’s actual salary will be capped at ₹18 crore.
  • Any amount above ₹18 crore from the winning bid will be transferred to the BCCI Welfare Fund, not paid to the player.
  • The ₹18 crore cap is decided by the lower of two values, the highest retention price in the current cycle (₹18 crore), or the highest winning bid from the previous mega auction.
  • Although the highest bid in the last mega auction went up to ₹27 crore (Rishabh Pant to LSG), the cap for the IPL 2026 mini-auction remains ₹18 crore, as it is the lower benchmark.
  • For example, if an overseas player is bid for ₹20 crore, the player will still receive only ₹18 crore.
  • The extra ₹2 crore from that bid will go directly to the BCCI Welfare Fund.
  • Importantly, franchises do not get any purse relief due to this cap.
  • A team bidding ₹20 crore will have the full ₹20 crore deducted from its auction purse, even though the player earns only ₹18 crore.
