On Tuesday, December 16, the IPL 2026 mini-auction took place at the Etihad arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Cameron Green was the star in the first hour as the Australia all-rounder rocked the event with a bidding war.

The 26-year-old, who was in high demand, garnered interest from Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, two teams with highest purse value. After a long bidding war, the Aussie star headed to the Knight Riders for a whopping 25.20 crores, making him the costliest overseas buy in the history of the league.

However, for the unversed, despite getting sold for 25.20 crores, Green will only earn 18 crores for the next season because of a new IPL rule, which came into effect last season. Meanwhile, this article will explain the new rule introduced by the BCCI governing body to refrain from exploitation during mini-auction.

IPL rule explained in Cameron Green's case

The new rule which is termed as the 'maximum cap'  rule, states that at any mini-auction, the maximum amount an overseas player can be paid is the highest bid for an Indian player at the previous mega-auction, or the highest retention amount from the previous mega-auction – whichever one is lower.

Although, it is worth noting that like how it happened during 2026 IPL auction, Cameron Green was sold for over 18 crores, but the remaining amount, which is 7.20 crores, will go to the BCCI, who will redirect it to BCCI-run player welfare programmes, where they will invest this money to uplift grassroot cricket.
