The Supreme Court (SC) has issued a legal notice to Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami. The notice was issued on Friday, November 7 over a plea filed by Shami’s estranged wife Hasin Jahan regarding monthly maintenance. Earlier, the Calcutta High Court had already granted Hasin Jahan a maintenance of Rs. 4 lakhs per month from the cricketer.

Even though the Supreme Court has now challenged the Calcutta High Court’s order following Hasin’s plea, the bench still remarked that the amount she was already receiving was “quite handsome”.

Hasin Jahan cites Mohammed Shami’s lifestyle for increase in maintenance

Earlier this year, the Calcutta High Court ordered Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami to pay Rs. 4 lakhs as monthly maintenance, which includes a fixed Rs. 1.5 lakh for his wife and Rs. 2.5 lakhs for their daughter Aaira Shami.

However, the order has now been challenged by Hasin Jahan, who is seeking a higher maintenance from her estranged husband.

Supreme Court (SC) bench of justices Manoj Misra and Ujjal Bhuyan how now rapped Hasin for seeking more maintenance, saying:

“Why have you filed this? Isn’t ₹4 lakh per month quite handsome?”

Senior advocate Shobha Gupta, who appeared for Hasin Jahan, justified the increased maintenance citing Mohammed Shami’s “lavish lifestyle” and a national contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The Supreme Court bench has now issued a notice to the Indian cricketer, and have posted the matter after four weeks.

The legal setback comes at a time when Mohammed Shami is already struggling to make his way back into the Indian team. To add to his woes, the veteran pacer continues to face trial in a criminal case filed by Hasin Jahan in 2018, alleging cruelty by him and his family.
