As India soaks in the spirit of its 79th Independence Day, the tricolour isn’t the only thing flying high. Cricket fans have another reason to feel proud as several of our star players not only serve the country on the cricket field but also carry the honour of government service.

These crciketer have balanced the roar of the crowd with the responsibilities that come with an official designation. Let’s take look at five active Indian cricketers who proudly wear both the national colours and the badge of a government job.

KL Rahul: Assistant Manager, Reserve Bank of India

When KL Rahul is not caressing cover drives or pulling pacers into the stands, he is officially an Assistant Manager at the RBI. Appointed through the sports quota in 2018, Rahul signed the dotted line right before leaving for an international tour.

The stylish right-hander, who has centuries in all three formats for India, was in sublime form during the recently-concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, proving yet again that class is permanent.

Mohammed Siraj: Deputy Superintendent of Police, Telangana

From steaming in with the new ball to saluting in uniform, Mohammed Siraj wears both hats with pride. The Hyderabad pacer was appointed DSP in Telangana in October last year with top police officials in attendance.

Siraj, never one to shy away from a challenge, wore his uniform with the same pride he shows when wearing India’s jersey. On the field, he was instrumental in India’s 2-2 draw in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Be it a cricket ball or a police baton, Siraj knows how to deliver under pressure.

Yuzvendra Chahal: Income Tax Officer

Leg-spinners are known for deceiving batters and Yuzvendra Chahal has been doing it for years with his looping deliveries. But away from the pitch, Chahal also works as an Income Tax Officer in Haryana, appointed via the sports quota. His role might not involve steaming in like a fast bowler, but it requires the same sharp eye and knack for catching people off guard, in this case, tax evaders instead of batters.

Chahal remains a force in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he is the only bowler to snag over 200 wickets. Even though he hasn’t been a regular in the national setup recently, his knack for delivering in clutch situations means he is still in the conversation whenever selectors look for experience.

Umesh Yadav: Assistant Manager, Reserve Bank of India

Another fast-bowling workhorse, Umesh Yadav may have slowed down in terms of appearances for Team India but he remains a respected name in Indian cricket. Appointed as an Assistant Manager at the RBI in 2017, Umesh has kept one foot in public service while continuing to ply his trade in cricket.

With 288 international wickets to his name, Umesh last played for India in the 2023 World Test Championship Final. Though he went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, the speedster still turns up in domestic cricket.

Deepti Sharma: Deputy Superintendent of Police, Uttar Pradesh

Not to be outdone by the men, the star all-rounder of India’s women’s team, Deepti Sharma was appointed DSP in Uttar Pradesh earlier this year. The honour came straight from CM Yogi Adityanath himself in a special ceremony.

Known for her calm head under pressure, Deepti’s all-round skills have been a match-winner for India and now she brings that same composure to public service.
