India’s prominent all-rounder Washington Sundar walked off the field during the first ODI between India and New Zealand at Vadodara on January 11 after suffering a side strain. Nitish Kumar Reddy was named as the replacement fielder for Sundar on the field.

The right-arm off-break spinner left the field after bowling five overs in the match. Notably, Washington Sundar was named in India’s playing XI following his contributions in the South Africa series in 2025.

When will Washington Sundar return on the field?

Although he did not have an impressive outing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, he still found a place in the side as an all-rounder, with Nitish Kumar Reddy sitting out of the initial playing XI.

Whether Washington Sundar’s injury is serious or only a minor concern is yet to be confirmed, as the situation remains under development and the team physios are set to assess the strain.

For now, Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was named in the India vs New Zealand ODI squad, has been called into action in the match. Before walking off the field, Washington Sundar bowled five overs, conceding 27 runs at an economy rate of 5.40, but remained wicketless.

Meanwhile, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, and Kuldeep Yadav picked up wickets to keep the New Zealand team under control.

Nitish Kumar Reddy can’t utilise the golden chance

Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was included in the New Zealand ODI squad to aid his development as a fast-bowling all-rounder, has finally received an opportunity, albeit through circumstances.

He was not named in the playing XI earlier despite Arshdeep Singh sitting out, as India opted for a spinner-heavy, all-rounder-focused combination at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.

Unfortunately, Reddy’s inclusion as a replacement fielder could not potentially see him bowl if Washington Sundar does not return to the field in time, as per ICC’s laws.
