The Olympic Games will witness the long-awaited return of cricket at the Los Angeles 2028 edition, with the first match scheduled to take place on July 12, 2028. This will mark a historic revival of the sport on the Olympic stage after 128 years. The official schedule for the cricket events was announced on July 14, 2025, exactly three years ahead of the Games.
It is important to note that cricket was last featured at the Summer Olympics in 1900, where only Great Britain and France participated in what is now recognized as an unofficial Test match. In contrast, LA28 will showcase a modern and competitive T20 format, with men’s and women’s tournaments, each featuring six international teams vying for gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Detailed Schedule For LA 2028
The cricket tournament will kick off two days before the official opening of the Olympics, referred to by the organizers as 'minus 2'.
- Group stage matches will run in two phases: from July 12 to 18, and from July 22 to 28.
- Medal matches (semifinals and bronze/gold matches) for both men and women will be played on July 19 and July 29, respectively.
- There will be no cricket fixtures on July 14 and 21, allowing for rest and transitions between stages.
- Each matchday will feature double-header fixtures, scheduled for 9:00 AM and 6:30 PM local time in Los Angeles. For Indian audiences, that translates to 9:30 PM IST and 7:00 AM IST.
Venue: Temporary Stadium At Pomona Fairplex
All cricket matches will be held at a specially built temporary venue at the Fairplex, located in Pomona, approximately 50 kilometres from downtown Los Angeles. The 500-acre venue, known for hosting the LA County Fair, will be transformed into a full-fledged Olympic cricket arena during the Games.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has allocated 90 athlete quotas per gender, with each team allowed to name 15-member squads, making it a compact yet competitive tournament structure.
Cricket’s return to the Olympics marks a major milestone in the sport's global growth. While men's cricket featured at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, women’s T20 cricket made its multi-sport debut at Birmingham 2022. Additionally, the T20 format has been a recurring event at the Asian Games, including the 2023 edition in Hangzhou.
