Over the years, several Indian cricketers have been honoured with positions in police and government services for their contributions to the game. Recently, after India’s historic triumph at the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, Richa Ghosh was promoted to the post of DSP in West Bengal. Richa was also awarded ₹34 lakh for every run she scored in the final against South Africa.
Harmanpreet Kaur, who led India to the World Cup title, also holds DSP rank in Punjab. Deepti Sharma, the all-rounder from Uttar Pradesh, holds a DSP post under the Kushal Khiladi Yojana since 2024. Mohammed Siraj was similarly appointed as DSP in Telangana Police after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 victory.
Veteran names like Harbhajan Singh and Joginder Sharma also serve the DSP role in the police. Having said this, in this article, let's take a look at the Indian Cricketers who hold police ranks.
Apart from many police officers, many Indian cricketers also serve in various roles, including in the Indian Army, in military ranks, or in important civil services.
MS Dhoni, who led India to its historic ICC World Cup 2011 victory, was awarded the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Territorial Army. Kapil Dev received the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army in 2008.
Sachin Tendulkar was given the honorary rank of Group Captain in the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 2010. With this, Tendulkar became the first sportsperson without an aviation background to receive such a prestigious rank.
Cricketers serving in civil and Government roles
Apart from honorary military ranks, some Indian cricketers also hold positions in civil services and public sector jobs. KL Rahul holds a position with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He joined the institution in 2018 through the sports quota. Similarly, Yuzvendra Chahal serves as an Income Tax Officer in Haryana.
