Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed has once again found herself at the centre of a controversy. This time, it’s not about Rohit Sharma’s fitness but about questioning the exclusion of Sarfaraz Khan from the India A squad.
The controversy began when the Indian selection committee declared two teams, headed by Rishabh Pant, for the forthcoming first-class series against South Africa A.
Sarfaraz Khan, who has been one of India’s top domestic performers in recent years, was not included. His exclusion caused public outrage on social media, with the fans disappointed and perplexed.
Shama Mohamed alleges discrimination against Sarfaraz Khan
Adding fuel to the fire, Shama Mohamed took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and suggested that Sarfaraz Khan was ignored because of his surname.
"Is Sarfaraz Khan not selected because of his surname ! #justasking . We know where Gautam Gambhir stands on that matter," Mohamed's tweet read.
Her tweet seemed to imply that religious discrimination may have been involved in the choosing and went so far as to imply that Gautam Gambhir, the coach, might be behind it.
This is not the first time Shama Mohamed has made headlines for controversial remarks about cricketers.
Earlier in March 2025, she had fat-shamed Rohit Sharma, referring to him as "fat for a sportsman" on a social media update.
The statement had evoked widespread outrage among fans, and the Congress party had reportedly reprimanded her, compelling her to remove the post.
Why was Sarfaraz Khan excluded?
Sarfaraz Khan was reportedly assured of selection for India’s home Test series against the West Indies but was left out due to fitness concerns.
The BCCI selectors finalised the squad on September 25, while Sarfaraz cleared his fitness two days later.
According to rumours, Sarfaraz didn’t receive the usual “subject to fitness” consideration. Selectors now believe his best chance is batting at No. 3, a position currently being tried by B Sai Sudharsan in the India A team under Rishabh Pant’s leadership.
