In a major development, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has suspended the upcoming 2025 edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL). The cricket board confirmed the same on Wednesday, October 22 through a media release, in lieu of next year’s 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup preparation.

The SLC has now decided to shift the LPL 2025 season to a “more suitable window” so as to give themselves time for hosting preparations for the multi-nation ICC event.

SLC puts LPL 2025 on hold for stadium renovation

Sri Lanka is set to co-host the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup next year in February and March alongside neighboring nation, India. With just few months remaining for the high-profile tournament, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is implementing various measures to enhance their stadiums.

In order to meet the demand of standard stadium enhancements for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, the SLC has now even decided to put the upcoming LPL 2025 season on hold at home. In a media release, the board confirmed that they will be utilizing this time to enhance and upgrade spectator stands of various Sri Lanka stadiums that are slated to host matches of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

The SLC also added that they will be improving and modernizing facilities for players like dressing rooms and training areas in the stadiums, and will be refurbishing international broadcast facilities along with making several other improvements.

The iconic R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, which is one of the three venues slated to host 2026 T20 World Cup matches, already had its renovation work halted for a while in order to stage 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup games.

With LPL 2025 postponed, the SLC has confirmed that the board will be relocating the season to a more suitable window.
