Legendary footballer Sunil Chhetri has urged the capacity crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium to back Indian bowlers during the Australian run-chase at the 2023 World Cup final.

Earlier in the match, Team India batters conjured up 240 from their 50 overs despite enjoying a powerplay batting bombardment from opener Rohit Sharma.

Sunil Chhetri urges Ahmedabad crowd

Indian footballer Sunil Chhetri, who also happens to be an avid cricket enthusiast, has urged the capacity Ahmedabad crowd to throw their support behind the ‘Men in Blue’ bowlers. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Chhetri wrote:

“To every Indian supporter in the stadium - make sure that our bowlers run up to a roar for every SINGLE BALL. This team has given us 10 flawless games. Let’s give them an unforgettable one. Pull these boys over the line.”

As it turned out, India’s new-ball speedster Mohammed Shami got his side an early breakthrough in the Australian innings by removing David Warner in his opening over. Emboldened by Shami’s early strike, his partner Jasprit Bumrah also dismissed Travis Head against the run of play a while later.

Earlier in the day, Team India amassed 240 in their 50 overs to mark their second worst batting effort of the tournament. Rohit Sharma clubbed 31-ball 47 at the top of the order, while Virat Kohli notched up his ninth fifty score of the competition to extend his World Cup 2023 tally to 765 runs.

KL Rahul, on the other hand, top scored in the innings with his cautious 66. Suryakumar Yadav failed to get going in the death overs to become one of Josh Hazlewood’s two wickets of the day.

Hazlewood’s new-ball teammate Mitchell Starc himself finished with figures of 3-55 from his 10 overs.
