Virat Kohli produced his 48th ODI century through the course of his run-chase masterclass against Bangladesh at the 2023 World Cup. While his 103-run counterpunch took him closer to Sachin Tendulkar's 49-ton tally, it also took him near Ricky Ponting for an all-time world record.

Virat Kohli a century short of Ricky Ponting

Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 103 against Bangladesh to guide Team India to their fourth successive win at the 2023 World Cup. His innings marked the 48th century of his ODI profile and the 78th of his international career overall.

Out of his 78 tons, Kohli has slapped 54 in winning causes for India. Currently, the cricketer only stands behind former Australian captain and all-time great Ricky Ponting in terms of winning centuries. The legendary Australian batsman, who notched up 71 centuries during his playing days, listed 55 in winning causes.

If Kohli manages to secure one more match-winning century, he will join Ponting for the all-time world record. Sachin Tendulkar, who blasted 53 of his 100 international tons on a winning note, stands third on the all-time celebrated list behind Kohli and former rival Ponting. Here is a list of the top five international batters with the most match-winning centuries to their name:

Batsman
Overall international centuries
Match-winning centuries
Ricky Ponting7155
Virat Kohli7854
Sachin Tendulkar10053
Hashim Amla5540
AB de Villiers4737

Virat Kohli almost joined Ponting through India's very next World Cup 2023 outing against New Zealand. The cricketer punched out an attacking 95 in yet another run-chase special. However, he perished at the brink of an Indian victory when he was just a hit away from securing his 49th ODI hundred.

Notably, a match-winning century, or any ODI century for that matter, will also bring Virat Kohli on equal terms with Sachin Tendulkar in terms of holding the most triple-figure scores in fifty-overs internationals.

Considering Kohli's recent form, one can expect the star Indian batter to achieve the feat during the ongoing 2023 World Cup.
